Libre Santal Couture

Libre Santal Couture is the 2026 limited edition of Yves Saint Laurent's Libre collection, and the first woody floral in the line. Anne Flipo, who already signed the 2019 pillar with Carlos Benaïm, keeps the founding contrast — lavender from France set against orange blossom from Morocco — but shifts the anchor: where the previous Couture editions descended toward vanilla, this one rests on a sandalwood from New Caledonia.

Where to buy

In 2019, Yves Saint Laurent took a bet that the industry had almost never attempted: building a mass-market feminine fragrance around lavender, a raw material that perfumery had for a century filed under shaving and masculine fougère. Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm went through more than seventeen hundred trials to find the balance. The perfumer herself states the intention: to take a masculine structure and reveal its feminine facet, exactly as the house had re-cut the tuxedo for women. It is this gesture, not a note, that founds the collection.

Seven years later, the line counts about ten expressions. L'Eau de Toilette lightens, L'Eau Nue goes alcohol-free, the Intense pushes further, Berry Crush adds fruit. All keep the same axis: the tension between lavender and orange blossom. What changes from one edition to the next is almost always the base — and that is where Santal Couture plays out.

The Couture editions, this limited series with the dressed-up bottle, had until now worked on sweetness: Libre Vanille Couture, in 2025, pushed the gourmand character to its limit. Santal Couture reverses the descent. The base is no longer sweet, it is woody. It is the first woody floral in the entire collection, and the house presents it as such. The opening contrast remains intact — Libre is recognizable from the first minute — but what the fragrance settles onto has changed in nature.

Yves Saint Laurent selected a sandalwood from New Caledonia, sourced under controlled supply, and applied to it an extraction developed specifically to retain only one facet of it. This is not a communication flourish: Pacific sandalwood has neither the same origin nor the same profile as Indian sandalwood, and the choice of a dedicated extraction steers the result toward an enveloping warmth rather than toward the woody dryness expected of a fougère base.

The orange blossom accord comes from the community gardens that the house operates in the Ourika valley, south of Marrakech — the same supply chain that feeds the other Libre editions. This is the point of continuity in the collection, the one through which Santal Couture remains immediately identifiable despite its changed base.

The result is warmer and more textured than the pillar, and reads easily beyond the feminine register alone. It is a late-season fragrance: on skin, the sandalwood takes on a second-skin presence that softens the lavender without erasing it. Fifty milliliters, Eau de Parfum, limited edition — neither the juice nor the bottle will be reissued.

Dua Lipa, face of the campaign for Libre since 2019

Santal Couture reuses the campaign face and signature of the pillar, without reworking the message: a variation, not a new departure.

Dua Lipa has embodied Libre since the 2019 launch. Such consistency is rare in mass-market perfumery, where campaign faces turn over at the pace of flankers, and it serves the collection: the image stays the same as the juice is declined into new versions.

The campaign signature, the fragrance of untamed freedom, is reused as is for this edition. The message is not reworked: Santal Couture presents itself explicitly as a variation on the pillar, not as a new departure.

Limited edition, a single fifty-milliliter size. Scarcity is part of the design.
