Paris is the eau de toilette that Yves Saint Laurent launched in 1983, composed by Sophia Grojsman. It pairs a fruity, almost jammy rose with a creamy violet; the couturier is said to have chosen the fragrance’s name and its pink color before the formula even existed. Yves Saint Laurent launched Paris in 1983. The couturier is said to have settled on the fragrance’s name and its pink color before it was even developed, and the composition went to Sophia Grojsman, a perfumer who grew up in Belarus.

Sophia Grojsman told Michael Edwards, in Perfume Legends, that she started from Guerlain’s Après l’Ondée, which she wanted lighter, airier and younger: a skeleton of creamy violet, to which she added the rose.

She also cited the violet color of the sky around the Eiffel Tower at dusk, at the blue hour, as the starting point for the fragrance’s violet.
