Armani Code

Giorgio Armani launched Armani Code in 2004, first under the name Black Code, an eau de toilette signed by Antoine Lie and Antoine Maisondieu. The house classifies it among ambery woody scents. Since 2023, it has presented it in a refillable bottle and describes its composition, which it says is unchanged, through green mandarin, lavandin, tonka bean and cedar.

Giorgio Armani launched a men’s fragrance called Black Code in 2004, soon renamed Armani Code, according to Now Smell This and the website Bespoke Unit. Antoine Lie and Antoine Maisondieu composed it. The house made it the seduction code of an elegant man and described it at the time as a woody oriental.

A whole line

The line expanded as early as 2006 with a women’s version and has since grown to more than thirty creations, according to Ron Pitt, for men and for women. The 2004 eau de toilette remains its starting point, the one the flankers take as their model.

A refillable bottle in 2023

In 2023, Armani housed the eau de toilette in a refillable bottle and described it differently: green mandarin from Calabria at the top, lavandin from Provence at the heart, tonka bean absolute and cedar at the base. The house nonetheless asserts that the original composition remains the same.

Ron Pitt, who compared a 2004 bottle with a 2023 bottle, notes only minimal, barely perceptible differences, the new version seeming to him to last a little longer. The change lies mainly, in his view, in the notes the brand displays.

What the house says today

For Armani, the eau de toilette remains a house classic, ambery and woody, full of contrasts, that shapes a seductive and sensitive masculinity. It highlights ingredients with traceable origins and a bottle designed to last.

What critics say

Ron Pitt of Dapper Confidential compared the original eau de toilette with its refillable version in 2023: minimal differences, a slight improvement in his eyes, and a fragrance he finds elegant, powdery and woody, cut out for evenings and the colder months.

From Chris Pine to Regé-Jean Page

In 2014, actor Chris Pine became the face of Armani Code; in 2023, the role went to Regé-Jean Page, who rose to fame in the series Bridgerton.

In February 2014, Giorgio Armani announced American actor Chris Pine as the new face of Armani Code, for a campaign unveiled in the spring. The designer praised his charisma, his natural elegance and the right amount of irony he shows on set.

The film shows him as a seducer in many roles, alongside model Larissa Hofmann, according to the magazine Senatus. The same year, Chris Pine also embodied Armani Code Ice, a fresher flanker launched in April 2014.

In 2023, the British Regé-Jean Page, an actor who rose to fame with Bridgerton, was presented as the face of the Armani Code fragrances. According to L’Officiel, his campaign was directed by Manu Cossu and photographed by Damon Baker, around a gentle masculinity free of ostentation.
