Yves Saint Laurent launched Elle in October 2007 in Europe and the Middle East; the United States received it first at Neiman Marcus, ahead of wider distribution in 2008. WWD reports that the house was targeting women aged 25 to 35.

A modern, urban woman

The brief called for a modern, urban and feminine fragrance with a touch of the masculine, Now Smell This reports. Andrea Barbier, head of YSL Beauté, calls it very fresh, very different from the house’s other fragrances and from the market.

Like L’Homme the year before, Elle targets a younger clientele, and the brand also launched it online: a dedicated website, videos, a blog, a MySpace page and a presence in the virtual world of Second Life.

Formats

The eau de parfum came out in 50 and 90 ml, at 70 and 95 euros according to WWD, with a 200 ml body lotion and shower gel.

What critics say

Robin, on Now Smell This, finds Elle perfectly nice and easy to wear, but a little bland next to its competitors and too late to live up to its promise of unpredictability.
