DIOR Sauvage Eau Forte Parfum sans alcool

Nine years after the launch of Sauvage, Dior released in 2024 a variation that plays not on concentration but on the medium itself. Sauvage Eau Forte dispenses with alcohol: the house replaces it with a formula in which an aqueous phase and an oily fragrant phase are emulsified together. The liquid that comes out of the bottle is opaque, milky white, whereas the line had until then only offered transparent juices.

Francis Kurkdjian, who directs the house's perfume creation, presents this choice as a way to extend freshness beyond what alcohol allows. Alcohol provides the sharp opening and immediate projection of classic formulas, then evaporates; by removing it, the brilliance of the first seconds is lost, and, according to the house, a freshness is gained that clings longer to the materials.

The most noticeable shift occurs at the top. The Sauvage signature rested on citrus notes—lemon, bergamot—which Kurkdjian sets aside here in favor of cold spices, supported by elemi resin, whose smell recalls pepper, dry zest and incense. The heart returns to lavender, the founding material of the lineage, but treated in a whitened manner: its camphoraceous and herbaceous facets are planed down to keep only a clean freshness. The base combines wood and musk.

The listing keeps it in the aromatic fougère category, the family of the entire Sauvage house line, but the fougère structure is dismantled here. Stripped of its citrus opening and the amber contrast that held the 2015 version together, what remains is a lavender-wood-musk column that the spicy freshness keeps in tension from start to finish, without the warm turn expected in the base.

Within the Sauvage range, Eau Forte thus occupies a distinct place. Very Cool in 2017, the eau de parfum flanker in 2018, the parfum in 2019, then the Elixir in 2021, had all shifted concentration without leaving alcohol behind. This change of medium has divided opinion: commentators expecting a denser Sauvage found instead a spicy, herbaceous composition, judged more sober and more mature than its predecessors, to the point that several barely link it to its lineage.

On performance, the feedback converges: the sillage tightens quickly and the fragrance becomes a skin scent after a few hours, whereas the alcoholic versions project more. Longevity, however, is not agreed upon, with some finding it long-lasting and others noticeably below the 2019 parfum. Eau Forte therefore speaks less to those seeking the demonstrative sillage of Sauvage than to those who want its freshness in a muted version.
