Wood

Wood is the plant tissue that makes up the greatest part of the trunk of woody plants. It is the NF B 50-003 standard, defining the nomenclature of wood, that establishes wood as a set of secondary resistant tissue (for support, conduction, and storage) that forms the trunks, branches and roots of woody plants. Wood has numerous uses, in construction as well as industry, energy, furniture and even perfumery!

The different varieties of wood

There is an endless variety of woods. Among the best known are mahogany, birch, cedar, cherry, oak, walnut, poplar, ebony, maple, pine, and more. Some varieties are highly prized in perfumery, among which are rosewood, sandalwood, cedar, and birch. Sandalwood is one of the woods most appreciated by noses. Sandalwood has always played an important role in both religious rites and personal prayers. In perfumery, sandalwood offers woody, soft, creamy and milky tonalities. Rosewood is also highly appreciated and comes directly from the Amazon rainforest. It lends compositions tonalities that are at once woody, floral and slightly spicy. Finally, cedarwood is an ingredient found in many of our fragrances, offering a very woody character. Atlas cedar or Virginia cedar is most often used. Oud wood is another wood highly favored by our noses. Oud wood (or agarwood) is considered the quintessence of an olfactory journey to the Orient. It gives off woody, ambery, mysterious, earthy and also sensual tonalities.

Cedarwood, Atlas cedar, oud or rosewood are part of many great perfumes and pair with all 7 olfactory families. The different woods are found within numerous chypre perfumes such as 24 Faubourg by Hermès, or oriental perfumes such as Allure by Chanel, Absolu Intense Simply Red by Rochas, A*Men Pure Coffee by Thierry Mugler, or also Ange ou Démon by Givenchy. Woods are also found within floral fragrances such as Absolutely Irresistible by Givenchy, Amarige by Givenchy, or also 1881 pour Femme by Cerruti. Woods can also be found at the heart of aquatic perfumes, as in Acqua Di Gio pour Homme by Armani.
