Sauvage by Dior: the whole line, from 2015 to 2026

Launched in 2015 by François Demachy, with Johnny Depp as its face, Sauvage now counts seven pages: the eau de toilette, its aerosol, the eau de parfum, the parfum, the elixir, the alcohol-free version and the extrait signed by Francis Kurkdjian in 2026.

A 1966 name, a 2015 fragrance

Dior launched Sauvage in September 2015. François Demachy, then the house’s perfumer-creator, signed the formula, and Johnny Depp became its face in a film by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. The name pays tribute to Eau Sauvage, Dior’s first men’s fragrance, composed by Edmond Roudnitska in 1966.

Eleven years later, the line counts seven pages on Olfastory. Demachy developed it from 2017 to 2021; Francis Kurkdjian, who succeeded him as Dior’s perfume creative director, signed the 2024 alcohol-free version and the 2026 extrait.

The 2015 eau de toilette

The eau de toilette remains the pillar of the line. The house presents it as an act of creation inspired by wide-open spaces, an ozone-blue sky above a white-hot mineral desert, and now calls it the best-selling men’s fragrance in its history.

Demachy starts from a Calabrian bergamot shaped with local producers and an Ambroxan that Dior describes as a marine amber wood. The American Fragrance Foundation gave it three awards in 2016. Victoria, of Bois de Jasmin, likes its contrasts; Kevin, of Now Smell This, finds it flat.

Two other ways to wear Sauvage

Dior also changes the fragrance’s form. In 2017, Very Cool Spray puts the eau de toilette in an aerosol; in 2024, Eau Forte composes Sauvage without alcohol, around water.

Sauvage Very Cool Spray

Christian Dior

An unbreakable 100 ml aerosol, propelled by compressed air alone, sprays the eau de toilette in any position; Demachy adds grapefruit at the top. Varanis Ridari, of The Scented Devil, sees it as nothing more than a lightened Sauvage and finds the format a poor deal.

Sauvage Eau Forte Parfum sans alcool

Christian Dior

Francis Kurkdjian composes the line’s first alcohol-free version around the power of water. The house presents it as a fresh, spicy fougère, as fresh as an eau de toilette and as intense as a parfum. Mondino photographs Johnny Depp before a waterfall.

The warm versions

From 2018, the line grows more concentrated and warmer: the vanilla of the eau de parfum, the amber tones of the parfum, the spices and licorice of the elixir, the oud of the extrait.

Demachy keeps the eau de toilette’s bergamot and warms it with a Papua New Guinea vanilla extract, with star anise and nutmeg at the heart. The house draws inspiration from a desert at twilight; Mondino photographs Johnny Depp near Joshua Tree.

2019 · Parfum · Mandarin, sandalwood, vanilla

Sauvage Parfum

Christian Dior

The concentrated 2019 version stands between extreme freshness and amber tones: mandarin and bergamot, Sri Lankan sandalwood and cedar, vanilla and tonka bean. Its campaign, filmed by Mondino in the Utah desert, was pulled within hours, accused of appropriation.

2021 · Parfum · Spices, lavender, licorice, sandalwood

Sauvage Elixir Parfum

Christian Dior

In 2021, Demachy composes the line’s most concentrated version, in the manner of a liqueur: a heart of spices, a Nyons AOP lavender, licorice and sandalwood in the base. Persolaise finds in it the spirit of the original, barely softened by a hint of refinement.

2026 · Extrait de parfum · Bergamot, oud, patchouli

Sauvage Extrait

Christian Dior

Dior’s first men’s extrait de parfum, signed by Francis Kurkdjian, places at its heart a Vietnamese oud essence with leathery facets, between Indonesian patchouli, Madagascar vetiver and Virginia cedar. Adam Hurly finds Sauvage’s signature in it, softened by creamier woods.

What links the Sauvage fragrances

Calabrian bergamot opens five of the seven versions; lavender, present from the 2015 fougère onward, runs through six. The variations each add their own material, grapefruit, vanilla, spices or oud, and Johnny Depp has remained the face of the line since 2015.

The blue remains. The shaded glass of the eau de toilette turns midnight blue for the eau de parfum, lights up with an amber glow at the base for the parfum, becomes a lacquered flask for the elixir and crystal-clear glass lacquered in blue for the extrait. Very Cool Spray leaves it for an aerosol.
