Shalimar Millésime Rose Eau de Parfum

Since 2021, Guerlain has treated Shalimar the way an estate treats its plots: each year, a Millésime takes a raw material already inscribed in the 1925 formula and pushes it alone to the forefront. The list of editions is not arbitrary; it follows the Guerlinade, the house accord built on six raw materials that runs from one bottle to the next for a century. Vanilla opened in 2021, tonka bean followed in 2022, iris in 2023, jasmine in 2024. Rose is the fifth. Only bergamot remains.

A gap in the series deserves mention: the collection skips the year 2025. Shalimar was celebrating its hundredth anniversary, and the house devoted the year to Shalimar L'Essence, also signed by Delphine Jelk. Rose therefore arrives after a pause, on a perfume that has just passed the century mark.

Its case differs from the previous four. Vanilla, tonka, iris and jasmine can be heard in Shalimar; rose has worked there from the origin without ever being heard distinctly. Putting it forward therefore does not mean adding a voice, but isolating the one that held the accord without being named.

Delphine Jelk signs this edition. Head of perfume creation at Guerlain, she came from fashion and then marketing before going through the Grasse Institute of Perfumery and composition perfumery; she is responsible for the original Petite Robe Noire, then a quiet launch sold only in the Paris boutique. The house describes her writing as defined by oppositions and tensions. The program of this Millésime is exactly that: a clear flower held against a dark resin.

Rather than one rose, she layers three, and the vocabulary used is not decorative. Absolute is obtained with volatile solvents, essence with steam, and rosewater is the hydrolate that this distillation leaves behind. Three processes, three readings of the same flower — and two distinct species, the May Centifolia grown in Provence, and the Damascena from Bulgaria and Turkey.

The absolute comes from Mas des Sources, in Grasse, an estate belonging to the Gastaldi family, brought back into activity in 2021 after several years dormant and farmed organically. The first rose harvest there dates to May 2023, and Guerlain has installed beehives there. Picking lasts only three to four weeks a year, is done by hand from dawn to noon, and the flower leaves at once for Grasse to be processed fresh. It is the same supply that feeds the standard Shalimar: the rose of the Millésime does not come from elsewhere, it comes from closer by.

The bottle stays the same; the bat-shaped label turns pale pink accented with gold, echoing the color of the liquid. The house places the intensity at mid-scale, which is modest for a Shalimar. Reception has been sharply divided, and the fault line is always the same, that of fidelity. Some read it as the clearest and most daytime-friendly version ever drawn from the lineage, a spring rose wearable without ceremony; others do not find the original signature in it and see a Shalimar meant for those who do not like Shalimar. Both readings describe the same juice.
