Rosewater

Rosewater is a byproduct of the distillation of rose petals, used in the making of rose essence. Rosewater is considered an ultra delicate essence. Rosewater is used just as much in cosmetics as in perfumery or in cooking. In the Maghreb as well as in the Middle East, rosewater was used in sweet preparations, ice creams, but also in poultry dishes. Being described as rosewater is otherwise said of a rather sentimental, even bland, story where everything is decided in advance.

The properties of rosewater

Rosewater is a floral water also called a hydrolat. Rosewater has been used as a skin and body treatment since antiquity. Its production is relatively simple since rosewater comes from a process of distilling petals. Placed in a still, rose petals release, through steam, a distillate that allows for the creation of a rosewater essential oil, then a flavored water. Rosewater is known for being soothing, toning, and hydrating. Rosewater enhances dry, mature, or tired skin and restores its vitality. It also tightens the pores of oily skin, and restores its freshness. Rosewater is found in numerous body creams and lotions, makeup removers, masks, but also bath products and shower gel. Soft and wonderfully fragrant, rosewater is quite naturally found in niche perfumery.

Rosewater in perfumery

The ultimate symbol of love, the rose is now regarded as the Queen of Flowers. Damask rose (or Damascena) is the variety most used to make rosewater. Damask rose is a horticultural variety, which has at least 30 fragrant petals. Damask rose is mainly grown in Syria, Turkey, and Bulgaria, in the famous Valley of the Roses. Like the rose, rosewater blends wonderfully well with all the olfactory families. Naturally, it will be found in feminine floral compositions, almost always alongside rose, as in Roses de Chloé by Chloé, an essence that gives the real impression of walking out of a rose garden. Rosewater (but also many types of rose) is found in Rose Absolue by Annick Goutal. Rosewater will also be found in a floral-woody musk composition such as in Eau d’Été 2010, l’Eau d’Issey by Issey Miyake. Rosewater can also be discovered within chypre-floral fragrances such as L’Eau de Chloé by Chloé or Aromatics in White by Clinique. Rosewater nevertheless finds its way into other fragrances, such as oriental compositions like Angel Aqua Chic 2013 by Thierry Mugler.
