Gentleman Eau de Toilette

Givenchy modernizes its Gentleman. Hubert de Givenchy was born in Beauvais. However, at barely 17 years old, he decided to move to Paris with a single idea in mind: to make a name for himself in the field of fashion. He began his career as a designer at only 24 years old.

In 1975, Hubert de Givenchy decided to offer men a third masculine Eau de Toilette. A perfect embodiment of refinement and an innate sense of chic, he decided to name his creation Gentleman. While this seductive and provocative fragrance remains fully relevant today, Givenchy had the idea to reinterpret it in 2017, offering a new vision of today’s men. But does this new fragrance live up to its predecessor? Is its aura still present? Here is our review of this fragrance for men.

Olfastory’s review

Gentleman by Givenchy, a total reinvention

First, note that Gentleman by Givenchy is a complete reinvention of the scent of its elder. Now, this is something rare enough to be highlighted. In this sense, Givenchy scores a point, and its boldness cannot go unnoticed. Gentleman by Givenchy expresses a masculinity of nuance and subtlety, like a seductive blend of confidence and tenderness. Crafted for a free and daring man, Gentleman escapes all the clichés of our time. It bets on a pronounced delicacy, all in refinement and paradoxes. Simply put, this fragrance is like a modern and offbeat vision of today's elegance. Spontaneous and virile, it invites us to see what men have become through the eye of Givenchy.

Gentleman by Givenchy, when virility and delicacy become one

Its subtlety is a real asset. Gentleman by Givenchy is far from men's fragrances saturated with testosterone. With it, strength reveals itself with sensitivity and nuance. In this composition, the house Givenchy dares a certain softness, relying notably on a floral breath. Lavender is paired with the nobility of iris. This gives this fragrance a powdery and sophisticated breath. Then, a smooth and sweet pear reinforces its seductive tenderness. Finally, in the background, its sillage slightly recalls that of 1975. It combines patchouli and leather. In other words, the initial dazzling freshness gives way to a more virile and vibrant refinement.

The graphic design of a timeless bottle

Finally, on the bottle side, Gentleman charms with the heavy weight of its massive glass, recalling that of its predecessor while daring a more modern look. The design of its bottle has a timeless character. Like the gentlemen of our time, this bottle is refined and deceptively casual. Devoid of any excess, it never overdoes it. A black band also marks its center, evoking the tuxedo worn in a contemporary, more relaxed way. Its cap also adopts a black lacquer finish perfectly matched to its label. This bears the name Gentleman with utmost simplicity. Like the fragrance it contains, this bottle results from many contrasts. Soft and streamlined, it displays a sophisticated yet authentic confidence.
Gentleman thus draws indeed on the philosophy of its elder. Yet it is a completely different fragrance, to which we wish the same longevity as that of its predecessor.
