Today, Givenchy reflects contemporary French luxury throughout the world. In 1957, the house entered perfumery with “L’Interdit,” a fragrance inspired by Audrey Hepburn. After a first men’s fragrance, “Monsieur de Givenchy,” the house unveiled “Givenchy Gentleman” in 1975, the fragrance of a new kind of man.

The modern man according to Givenchy

“Givenchy Gentleman” is the house’s second men’s fragrance. At the time, few men were drawn to perfumery, which mainly offered classic fragrances. The Givenchy man aims to be modern, courteous, somewhat seductive, but above all self-assured. The Givenchy man is also interested in fashion and his appearance… He is the “new” man of the 1970s. Far removed from the eau de cologne or fresh waters then in fashion, “Givenchy Gentleman” presents itself as a robust and powerful scent that breaks with convention. For the 1970s, this was a bold bet… A powerful and distinguished identity makes “Givenchy Gentleman” the perfect representation of timeless masculine seduction.

The bold notes of Givenchy Gentleman

Bold and powerful, this is the composition imagined by Paul Léger. “Givenchy Gentleman” opens on a fresh and lively accord of bergamot and lemon. These readily combine with honey and rose, for added sweetness. The heart is built on iris, a rare ingredient in men’s perfumery. It is joined by jasmine, cinnamon, and woody notes thanks to cedarwood and patchouli. The base becomes even more sensual and closes on a very distinctive fragrance, that of Russian leather, which lends the composition a very animalic touch. The bottle is made of heavy, transparent glass that reveals the color of its juice. The metal cap gives it a distinct character. Like the composition, the bottle overflows with elegance and personality. “Givenchy Gentleman” takes pride in its appearance; it represents modern, contemporary men who live in step with their time.

At a time dominated by eau de cologne, the Givenchy fashion house attempted a fragrance that was then unprecedented for the 1970s: “Givenchy Gentleman.” Beneath an evident sweetness, “Givenchy Gentleman” carries the notes of a distinguished, characterful fragrance. The bottle is imposing and proudly displays its elegance. “Givenchy Gentleman” has become a timeless men’s fragrance.

Olfastory’s review

The original Gentleman fragrance by Givenchy. The story of Givenchy’s very famous gentleman begins in 1974. After a first men’s fragrance, Monsieur Givenchy, the brand introduced Givenchy Gentleman, intended as the fragrance of a modern and free-spirited man. Courteous, seductive, but somewhat provocative, Givenchy’s gentleman does not go unnoticed. Far from eau de cologne, Givenchy Gentleman asserts an unprecedented and highly masculine personality. Bold, the composition, both fresh and elegant, is signed by Paul Léger.
