Diesel launched Only the Brave in 2009, with L’Oréal; Aliénor Massenet, Olivier Polge and Pierre Wargnye of IFF composed the formula. A woody amber according to the house, it opens on lemon, mandarin and coriander leaves, before a heart of labdanum, violet leaves and rosemary and a base of amber, a leather accord and cedar. Its bottle takes the shape of a fist.
A blue glass fist, circled by a ring engraved Diesel, which stands upright, lies flat or balances; it is inspired by Renzo Rosso’s fist.
The Only the Brave bottle is a clenched fist, sculpted in glass and adorned with the Diesel inscription, shaped like a ring. For the house, it reflects the determination and tenacity of someone who holds on to what he truly desires.
It is inspired by the fist of Renzo Rosso, Diesel’s founder, as Now Smell This and the journalist Anne Thoumieux noted in 2009, the latter likening it to the world of hip-hop. Osmoz points out that it stands upright, lies flat or balances on the wrist.
The fist became the collection’s signature shape, taken up in 2012 for Only the Brave Tattoo. At its launch, the eau de toilette came in three sizes; the house’s website now offers only the 50 ml bottle.
