Where to buy

Yves Saint-Laurent, with the help of 3 leading figures in perfumery, creates a contrasted and captivating fragrance, marked by a deliberately chic yet dark and mesmerizing image...

When the night offers its mysterious powers: La Nuit de l’Homme

Reinterpreting an original perfume such as L’Homme, released in 2006, was inevitably a bold gamble. It required transposing a new universe, a new image far darker and more elusive than the original juice, all without disappointing its devotees. Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, Pierre Wargnye—three great noses of contemporary perfumery—were tasked with offering Yves Saint-Laurent a deep and captivating fragrance while preserving the elegance of the first juice: the gamble paid off, and La Nuit de l’Homme was born in 2009, to our great delight.

Of course, to embody this dark image of a “luminous” man, what figure could have been better suited than the handsome and brooding Vincent Cassel to be the face of the campaign for this La Nuit de l’Homme? Thus the visuals and advertisements unfold in exaggerated blacks and whites, creating aesthetic and elegantly retro lighting effects. Thanks to its first ambassador, the fragrance has a distinct character, a personality all its own. The faces of La Nuit de l’Homme who succeeded Vincent Cassel, Garrett Hedlund and Vinnie Woolston, would also offer a fine duality between the charms of an irreverent beauty and the dark gaze of a seducer with a tender heart, one that any man could identify with.

La Nuit de l’Homme, or the fragrance of a modern man with multiple facets

Each Yves Saint-Laurent fragrance reflects one facet of its character. La Nuit de l’Homme is, of course, a vibrant tribute to the complex, modern masculinity of a man who wishes to be playful and charming while remaining sensitive and secretive, profoundly “dark”.

The bottle thus mirrors the dualities of the fragrance: the black gradients of the thick, full-bodied bottle evoke the elegance of a tuxedo but also the chiaroscuro of a virility that is not always easy to carry. As for the nut-shaped cap or the shape of the bottle, they of course reference the first opus, L’Homme, which used a highly fashionable industrial aesthetic to convey images of modernity.

Clearly, upon discovering La Nuit de l’Homme, it would be difficult not to expect striking contrasts and olfactory surprises. Cardamom and bergamot, from the very first top notes, are enveloping and spicy while remaining fresh and delicate. Lavender in the heart note brings the power of its aromatic, floral scent while continuing to diffuse freshness and tonic, invigorating accords. It is the sensual, woody base notes of vetiver and cedar, enhanced with coumarin and cumin, that will certainly surprise our bewitched senses the most.

The composition of La Nuit de l’Homme, at once fresh and seasoned with luxurious, original spices mixed with powerfully woody and animalic notes, offers multiple visions of masculinity. This is exactly the type of warm, sensual virility paired with fresh sweetness that clings to the skin and faces of modern, assertive men—tender and audacious, charming as much as loving, dark and luminous...

Olfastory’s review

The bestseller among YSL men's fragrances: La Nuit de l’Homme. La Nuit de l’Homme, released in 2010, follows the success of L’Homme, whose primary purpose was to celebrate contemporary men. L’Homme is a magnetic, charismatic fragrance. Yves Saint Laurent subsequently offered several flankers, including La Nuit de l’Homme. Darker and more powerful than its elder, La Nuit de l’Homme is a chiaroscuro nectar that reveals masculine seduction in its entirety. La Nuit de l’Homme is a fragrance that deserves to be worn at the heart of the night, where seduction becomes more enigmatic.

The advertising

La Nuit de l’Homme was born in 2009, following the great success of L’Homme, released in 2006. La Nuit de l’Homme is unquestionably the fragrance of the contemporary and sexy man. At once contrasted and captivating, La Nuit de l’Homme is a true olfactory jewel. Here, Yves Saint Laurent leads us into the world of night, a world as mysterious as it is alluring. The result is a hypnotic, elusive fragrance that fits perfectly with today's man. Bolstered by the fascination it exudes, he can boast a very particular power of attraction...

Vinnie Woolston, Yves Saint Laurent's handsome face

After Garrett Hedlund and Vincent Cassel, it is now the turn of New Zealander Vinnie Woolston to embody Yves Saint Laurent's bad boy. Considered the “most handsome man” of the moment, Vinnie Woolston indeed lacks no charisma. Born in 1985 in the Auckland region, Vinnie Woolston was working in a skate shop before being spotted by an agent who suggested he become a model. He quickly began walking runways for ready-to-wear brands such as Diesel and Thierry Mugler. The handsome Vinnie is highly athletic, a skater at heart; he trains every day since he lives just steps from the ocean... For 10 years, Vinnie Woolston has happily embodied Yves Saint Laurent's “L’Homme”. When asked what he thinks of the fragrance La Nuit de L’Homme, Vinnie Woolston states that what seduces him, and seduces the women in his life, his wife and his mother, is its wave of oriental, woody and spicy sensuality, as well as the natural alchemy between its sillage and his skin...

A black-and-white clip for YSL's La Nuit de L'Homme

It was a young director, Kahlil Joseph, who conceived the advertising clip for La Nuit de l’Homme. It depicts a chase in black and white, filmed to the song Red Eyes by Thomas Azier. His futuristic electro-pop song carries the viewer through the clip. The aim of the advertising campaign was to reinvent the codes of seduction while lowering the target age. We thus follow the man at the heart of the night. Yet here, it is not the man chasing the woman, but the reverse! Black and white was chosen by Kahlil Joseph for its narrative power. Here, Vinnie Woolston appears more thrilling than ever, and La Nuit de l’Homme takes on its full meaning.

To represent a fragrance as charismatic as La Nuit de l’Homme, a face equal to the task was needed. Vinnie Woolston perfectly embodies this man who roams the city at night. At once elegant and highly seductive, Vinnie Woolston hypnotizes us beautifully, just like the fragrance La Nuit de L’Homme itself.
