Where to buy

Such is the case with the iconic N°5. It is considered to be one of the best-selling perfumes in the world. Also, if its iconic name shifted perfumery into a new era, it now returns in a format more airy and floral than ever. Make way for the new myth: Chanel N°5 L'Eau.

Chanel's emblem

Now recognized as an essential of perfumery, Chanel N°5 reinvents itself in a new format. It dares contrasts and seems to have suddenly allowed itself to combine the cheap and the precious, jersey and fur, flowers and aldehydes. However, N°5 L'Eau by Chanel does retain the codes and tradition of its predecessor while modernizing them. It carries Chanel's rich olfactory heritage. This conveys a certain idea of femininity, made of chic and elegance and passed down from generation to generation. Paradoxically, N°5 L'Eau by Chanel has managed to preserve its scent signature from another era while imposing on it a pure and disconcerting modernity. It is at once the past, the present and the future. It plunges us back into Chanel's history and stands as the founding essence of this brand turned cult. Of course, the raw materials of the past have been preserved, serving as a guarantee of excellence and quality for this new fragrance. Moreover, it is perfumer Olivier Polge who took on this exercise in style consisting of revolutionizing Chanel N°5 to bring it in tune with our times without forgetting its origins. The bet was bold but this exceptional perfumer seems to have brilliantly won it. He writes a new chapter of this monumental work of perfumery and, in doing so, signs one of his finest creations.

The new formula of Chanel N°5 L'Eau

Although it bears the name Eau, do not be mistaken, it is not a Cologne. Nor is it in any way a diluted version of its predecessor. It has its own personality and, above all, its own breath of modernity. It displays a perfect balance up to the achievement of an ideal of freshness. The orange peel of before has been preserved. Nevertheless, it is the aldehydes that have been favored while the metallic scents have been set aside. The idea was to create a fragrance more zesty but less powdery than its elder. The transparency of Chanel N°5 L'Eau shows itself from the very first breath. It is less abstract than before and makes a blend of citrus shine as if it were a sun-kissed honey. It is composed, moreover, of lemon, mandarin and orange. Then, everything gives way to a heart more floral in which rose echoes jasmine as well as ylang-ylang. The whole turns out to be very creamy and would almost resemble delicate lace. Finally, Chanel N°5 L'Eau ends with more vibrations. Its sillage combines vetiver, cedar and cottony musks.

The advertising

Released in 2016, N°5 L'Eau is of course a revisiting of the very famous and no less mythical N°5 by Chanel. The history of this fragrance created by Ernest Beaux dates back to 1921. The house's first fragrance, N°5 is still in the top 10 best-selling women's perfumes in the world, almost a century later… N°5 experienced a first variation with Eau Première, imagined by Jacques Polge. Then, in 2016, it is his son, now the official perfumer of the house of Chanel, who created N°5 L'Eau.

Lily-Rose Depp succeeds her mother at Chanel

It is Lily-Rose Depp whom the house of Chanel chose to represent its eau, aimed at younger, more modern women. Lily-Rose Depp is none other than the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, thus succeeding her mother, who was herself the face of the campaign for Coco Chanel. In 1990, Vanessa Paradis was just 18 years old when she became the face of Chanel and embodied Coco, in a campaign directed by Jean-Paul Goude. 26 years later, it is her daughter who represents N°5 L'Eau in a clip directed by Johan Renck titled You know me and you don't, which means Vous me connaissez et vous ne me connaissez pas… At 16, Lily-Rose Depp begins her career in spectacular fashion. She embodies the paradox of modern young women. At once fragile, bold and ultra contemporary, Lily-Rose Depp perfectly represents the young women of today and follows wonderfully in her mother's footsteps.

A deconstructed advertising film by Chanel for N°5 L'Eau

To embody the new generation of women, Chanel chose a deconstructed advertising clip, stringing together 8 scenes of everyday life, symbolic scenes such as celebration or rebellion. For the house of Chanel, the choice of Lily-Rose Depp fits within a desire for transmission linked to a desire to evolve. The advertising clip You know me and you don't is filmed in Paris. We chose iconic locations, explains the house of Chanel. Through all these scenes of life, one discovers Lily-Rose Depp, in turn romantic, rebellious, festive, glamorous or singing, and one cannot deny the physical resemblance to her mother. This 3.0 writing of the new Chanel N°5 is a manifesto film more than a narrative, states Thomas du Pré Saint Maur, director of Creative Resources at the house of Chanel… A new way of living one's youth embodied by a face of the campaign for modern times and a bold clip.

26 years after Vanessa Paradis, it is her daughter Lily-Rose Depp who symbolizes the prestigious house of Chanel. Here, the revisiting of the mythical N°5 is carried out by Olivier Polge, who presents a younger, ultra contemporary eau, N°5 L'Eau. The advertising clip, a succession of scenes, takes us through key locations of the capital.
