N°5

N°5 is the eau de parfum that Jacques Polge composed in 1986 for Chanel from Ernest Beaux's 1921 perfume, the first ever created for Gabrielle Chanel. An aldehydic floral bouquet built around rose and jasmine, citrus at the top, soft vanilla in the base, according to the house; Victoria Frolova hears in it the most assertive version of N°5. Square bottle with a faceted stopper, from 35 to 200 ml.

Where to buy

Chanel tells its birth in three sentences: in 1921, Gabrielle Chanel asked Ernest Beaux for a woman's perfume with a woman's scent, rare and powerful; the perfumer offered her a visionary composition that used aldehydes like no one before him; Mademoiselle chose the fifth trial and kept the number as its name.

1921, a couturière's first perfume

Numéro dates the launch to 1921 and notes that no couturière had ever launched a perfume under her own name; the blog Cultures et Histoires de Mode, on the occasion of the N°5 Culture Chanel exhibition, gives May 5, 1921, and the founding of Parfums Chanel in 1924, when Gabrielle Chanel established the profession of couturier-perfumer.

Victoria Frolova, on Bois de Jasmin, traces the versions: the 1921 extract, an eau de cologne rebalanced by Beaux in the 1930s, and Henri Robert's eau de toilette in 1952. In 1986, Jacques Polge, Chanel's perfumer since 1978, wrote the eau de parfum, a fuller version according to the house.

N°5 today

Chanel sells the eau de parfum in 35, 50, 100 and 200 ml, in a refillable Twist and Spray purse bottle, and distinguishes it from its two sisters: the eau de toilette, woody and textured, and L'Eau, a vibrant freshness. The sillage of the eau de parfum, states the house, is amber and sensual.

Since September 2024, Margot Robbie has been the face of N°5, photographed by Karim Sadli, reports Chanel; Fresh Mag Paris notes that she takes the place of Marion Cotillard. In 2026, the eau de toilette receives a new bottle with a magnetic cap, while the eau de parfum and its stopper remain unchanged.

Olfastory’s review

Frolova (Bois de Jasmin) gives five stars to N°5 and considers Polge's eau de parfum its most assertive version, sharper than the extract.

See You at 5, Guadagnino and Robbie

Since October 2024, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi in See You at 5 by Luca Guadagnino, set to Daft Punk; following Kidman, Bündchen, Cotillard, Bouquet.

Chanel announces Margot Robbie as the face of N°5 in September 2024, photographed by Karim Sadli; See You at 5 arrives in October, with its first television broadcast on the 16th according to Packshotmag. Luca Guadagnino shoots it on 35 mm along the roads of California, with Jacob Elordi, set to Veridis Quo by Daft Punk.

Journal du Luxe reads into it a missed rendezvous, travel and spontaneity; Packshotmag notes Robbie's red suit, a nod to the one worn by Carole Bouquet in Monuments, Ridley Scott's 1986 film, and a final plunge into the ocean. FashionNetwork places the campaign four years after the previous one.

Wallpaper traces the lineage: Ridley Scott in 1986, Le Loup by Luc Besson with Estella Warren in 1998, Baz Luhrmann with Nicole Kidman in 2004 and Gisele Bündchen in 2014. Runway Magazine goes back to 1937, when Gabrielle Chanel herself posed for Harper's Bazaar under the lens of François Kollar.
