Eau de Campagne

Eau de Campagne: The first perfume by the house of Sisley The house of Sisley was created in 1976 with the release of its very first perfume, Eau de Campagne. Far from the classics of perfumery or the advertising of the time, Isabelle and Hubert d'Ornano innovated by offering a natural, chic perfume with no pretension beyond being a fresh, bucolic fragrance.

Where to buy

Composed by Jean-Claude Ellena, Eau de Campagne brought a new breeze into the heady perfumes of the era, one that no one would forget.

Eau de Campagne and Sisley's “country chic” communication

Far from the usual heady or intensely “patchouli” perfumes of their time, Isabelle and Hubert d'Ornano, at the head of their brand-new cosmetics house Sisley, championed a style entirely at odds with the usual practices of perfumery. Eau de Campagne indeed has absolutely nothing to do with the Poisons and other perfumes with intense sillage of its era. It exhales nature, the green and fresh countryside, life in the open air…

What is more, Eau de Campagne does not stop at offering simple green notes; thanks to the talent of Jean-Claude Ellena, it modernizes them by bringing in unprecedented scents of tomato or basil. The perfumer indeed recounts to Madame Figaro this bold wager: I still remember meeting Hubert d'Ornano, I was very impressed. He asked me for a scent of lettuce or apples. More Mediterranean than Norman, I proposed tomato leaves to him, an essence unprecedented in perfumery. He took the samples with him, called me back a few days later telling me it was OK: his secretarial staff had loved the perfume.

For this Eau de Campagne, everything would therefore be different. The advertising, for instance, would not bother with an ambassador or grandiloquent effects; instead, Isabelle and Hubert d'Ornano themselves were photographed by a friend in their everyday life in the countryside, the better to exhale what would later be called the lifestyle or the art of French living. Eau de Campagne would be the perfume of those who have nothing to prove, according to Sisley…

Tomato and basil for an elegant and relaxed Eau de Campagne

Just like its communication or the very essence of its composition, Eau de Campagne aims to be understated and elegant, with just enough chic to be loved. The unisex bottle plays on its restraint to offer an elegant aristocratic coat of arms, none other than that of Isabelle d'Ornano's family.

Jean-Claude Ellena's little natural masterpiece opens on tangy notes of lemon and bergamot, accompanied by the aromatic freshness of basil. At the heart, the star of the fragrance, green tomato leaf, emerges from the vegetable garden to mingle with precious jasmine and lily of the valley, punctuated by a touch of plum. Geranium lends its powerful, sharp freshness to the whole. The depths of oakmoss, musk and patchouli give this Eau de Campagne a gentle sensuality that leads away from the gardens and into the mysteries of chypre woods.

Fresh, green, casual chic. A concentrate of nature, an olfactory symbol of the French art of living. The perfect harmony of citrus notes and a natural, green signature on a chypre base. Eau de Campagne, Sisley.
