Bold and avant-garde, Gabrielle, nicknamed “Coco”, imposed the Chanel style, that of a free and naturally elegant woman. Mysterious and intense, “Coco Noir” reveals the dark personality of Mademoiselle Chanel, as a tribute to her least-known facet.

Black according to Chanel

The revolution that Coco Chanel carried out took place at the level of women’s fashion, affecting cuts, lengths, style, but also colors. At that time, black was the color reserved for funerals and periods of mourning. Yet Gabrielle Chanel loved black. For her, it was a color that enhanced women, but it was also the color she had known throughout her childhood, one that reminded her of the monastic rigor of the Aubazine orphanage. Mademoiselle Chanel wanted to democratize black so that it would become a simple and elegant color. Brought up to date in 1926, the little black dress would go on to enjoy undisputed and timeless success. Even though the little black dress is today an essential piece of the wardrobe, it should not be forgotten that it was Gabrielle Chanel who brought the color black to the fore, as she herself put it so well: before her, no one would have dared to dress in black.

The voluptuous notes of Coco Noir

The notes of “Coco Noir” rest mainly on musky and woody scents. Here, the darker the notes, the more bewitching they are. “Coco Noir” opens on spicy citrus with the pairing of grapefruit, bergamot and pink pepper. The heart is a delicate floral blend of jasmine, geranium, narcissus and rose, which brings a feminine facet to the fragrance. The base is a voluptuously intense sillage. One notices the presence of particular ingredients such as sandalwood from New Caledonia, tonka bean from South America, or patchouli from Indonesia. Woody and musky, the base is also charged with vetiver, enhanced with incense, cedarwood and white musks. A note of sensuality reveals the whole thanks to Bourbon vanilla. Deep black here lifts the veil on a woman radiant with beauty.

Here, wood, resins, flowers and spices combine in an intense and deep sillage. A magnetic composition pushed to its peak, which transposes the woman in all her radiance. “Coco Noir”, because black has always been, for Gabrielle Chanel, the revealer of an extreme femininity. A fragrance between darkness and light… “Coco Noir” or the reincarnation of luxury.

Olfastory’s review

Gabrielle Chanel is considered one of the greatest creators of the last century. Having considerably revolutionized women’s fashion, she contributed greatly to the emancipation of women. Nicknamed Coco, she fascinated as much through her indomitable character as through her visionary spirit and boundless ambition. It is therefore to pay tribute to her that the fragrance Coco Noir was created, in 2012. Taking up numerous codes of the Chanel house, it reveals the idea of a radiant femininity through a bewitching black colorway. If this choice may seem paradoxical, it would seem that black has never been used so much to put women in the spotlight. Here is our review of Coco Noir by Chanel.

Karlie Kloss under the lens of Sundsbø

An announcement from August 2014 made Karlie Kloss the face of Coco Noir, photographed by Sølve Sundsbø, the black bottle held against her face.

An announcement from August 2014 named Karlie Kloss as the new face of Coco Noir, her first campaign for the house. The print visual is photographed by Sølve Sundsbø and shows the model’s silhouette holding the bottle against her face. On this occasion, two earlier faces of the house are recalled, Blake Lively and Keira Knightley.

An online magazine describes a very dark image, in which the face is barely distinguishable next to the black bottle.
