Un Jardin à Cythère Eau de Toilette

It all began in 2003, when the house of Hermès asked Jean-Claude Ellena, its official perfumer, to create a pared-down fragrance, in the same vein as the previous Eau d'Orange Verte. This is how the very first Jardin d'Hermès came to be. At that time, it was a unisex fragrance inspired by the Mediterranean. Since then, however, this saga has grown considerably. In 2022, the tradition continues and a new arrival joins the Hermès lineup: Un Jardin à Cythère.

The Jardins d'Hermès collection

The Jardins d'Hermès are not merely unisex fragrances. They are invitations to explore the world, through authentic gardens, with the emblematic scent of certain countries. They are olfactory walks that intoxicate the senses. Symbols of daydreaming and escape, they draw inspiration both from a theme and from the soul of a place. With them, everything is poetry and time no longer matters. It seems suspended. The beauty of the vegetation and its scents prevail over everything else!

Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès, a fragrance straight from Greece

Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès takes us to a Greek island, located at the heart of the Aegean Sea, between Crete and the Peloponnese. Belonging to the Ionian Islands, Cythera is an enchanting place that has already inspired countless artists. While tourism there is not highly developed, creativity is omnipresent. Cythera was the muse of many painters and poets throughout its history. Today, its beauty gives rise to a fragrance: Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès.

Un Jardin à Cythère, a delectable blend of pistachio and olive wood

Un Jardin à Cythère was created by the official perfumer of the house of Hermès: Christine Nagel. She imagined a surprising fragrance, like a garden, neither truly green nor fully floral. In fact, Jardin à Cythère is meant to be rather blond and enveloping. It opens with the freshness of citrus, characteristic of the Mediterranean basin. Then, it wraps itself in a softer, more tender pistachio. This is when the strength of olive wood makes its appearance. It comes to structure the whole, while also giving it more persistence.

When the sun's rays illuminate the Hermès bottle

Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès is presented in the house's iconic lantern-shaped bottle. This heavy, luxurious glass block is here enhanced with a sun-kissed juice, echoing its sunny origins. The whole is also housed in a cardboard box decorated by Elias Kafouros. For the occasion, the artist chose to create a colorful landscape. Grass and olive trees stand out against the blue of the sea in the background, while a few pink buds brighten the whole. As for sizes, Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès is available in three different formats. This unisex Eau de Toilette comes in bottles of 30, 50 and 100 ml.

Olfastory’s review

It was in 2003 that the house of Hermès gave birth to its first Jardin. It was then a Jardin en Méditerranée. This offered an escape as fresh as it was sun-drenched at the heart of the Mediterranean, not far from the Middle East. Many other creations followed. Today, the Jardins d'Hermès form an iconic collection, which continues to grow year after year. In 2022, it is joined by Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès. So, what about this journey at the heart of the Peloponnese? Here is our review.

A film in Super 16 mm

An editorial page from the house and a film shot in Super 16 mm, directed by Alexander Silberstein and photographed by Jan Vrhovnik.

Hermès accompanies the launch with an editorial page built around a statement by Christine Nagel inviting one to trust one's memory, one's recollections and one's nose, and around the idea of the sun taken as a fragrance.

A campaign film bearing the name of the fragrance is credited to Alexander Silberstein for direction and to Jan Vrhovnik for cinematography, produced by 1718 Paris and shot in Super 16 mm. The same credits list Corentin Still for art direction and set design, Everest for post-production, Robin Risser for color grading and Edgar Delambre for sound.
