Noir is the men’s eau de parfum Tom Ford launched in 2012 in his Signature line, composed by Olivier Gillotin. The designer calls it enigmatic, complex and surprising: an oriental in which bergamot and verbena open onto rose, geranium and iris, ahead of a base of patchouli, vetiver, vanilla and civet.
Victoria, on Bois de Jasmin, gives four stars to this polished, dramatic oriental; Kevin, on Now Smell This, likes its opening and drydown but finds its heart awkward, to the point of recommending Jicky instead.
What critics say
Now Smell This, September 2012
Kevin feels that Tom Ford Noir almost succeeded. He likes the opening and the end, but finds the heart unfinished: the geranium-tinged notes strike him as awkward, and the stage reminds him of shampoo.
He rates its projection and longevity as so-so, recommends Guerlain’s Jicky to anyone looking for this kind of oriental, and admits that the prospect of another Tom Ford perfume does not excite him.
Bois de Jasmin, October 2012
Victoria gives Noir four stars, finding it polished and well-crafted, a strong oriental that stands out in the men’s market. She notes plenty of drama in it, and remarkable presence and lasting power.
She compares it to Guerlain’s Habit Rouge, of which it would be a close relative, while praising its own craftsmanship.
