Sauvage is the men’s eau de toilette François Demachy composed for Dior in 2015, with Johnny Depp as its face. It rests on a Calabrian bergamot shaped with local producers, on Sichuan pepper and on ambroxan, which the house describes as a marine ambery wood. Its name salutes Eau Sauvage, created in 1966, without borrowing anything from its formula.
Dior today sums up Sauvage in a few materials: a juicy Calabrian bergamot, Sichuan pepper, resinous elemi and ambroxan, which it describes as a marine ambery wood, all bound together by woods.
The bergamot comes from an exclusive supply chain. Steeped in sun, it is, according to the house, fruitier than usual, with slightly peppery and zesty facets. Ambroxan, which Dior links to ambergris, evokes for it a piece of sun-bleached driftwood.
The launch notes
The notes announced in 2015 place bergamot and pepper at the top; Sichuan pepper, lavender, pink pepper, vetiver, patchouli, geranium and elemi at the heart; ambroxan, cedar and labdanum at the base.
The ingredient list published by Dior declares several of these materials as essential oils: bergamot, lemon, patchouli, lavender, geranium and rose. It also names coumarin and vanillin among its fragrant components.
