Amor Amor came out in 2003, composed for Cacharel by Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyère, both then at IFF. A fruity floral made instantly mouthwatering by its top of citrus and blackcurrant, before a discreet rose and a vanilla base where amber and sandalwood surface. Its red bottle with a metal stem made it a recurring Valentine’s Day gift, and critics, reluctant at first, came to praise its construction.

First dismissed by Auparfum over its campaign, Amor Amor won critics over with its construction. Bois de Jasmin sees it as a high point of the fruity floral genre, and Nez magazine classes it as a gourmand amber.

What critics say

Critics judged Amor Amor on its image before judging it on its juice. The first verdict is harsh; later readings recognize a careful construction.

An initially hostile critical reception

The first verdict published by Auparfum, in 2006, amounts to rejection. The advertising campaign and the teenage positioning are called kitsch, and the fragrance is dismissed out of hand as a supermarket product.

The second reading changes tone, over several tries. Amor Amor gains qualities of construction, commercial as much as creative, and a balance that nothing in its advertising presentation gave reason to expect.

What critics credit it with

Bois de Jasmin goes further and names it the best fruity floral of its kind, owning the excess of such a claim. The argument rests on the balance of the whole rather than on the originality of a material.

Bois de Jasmin also notes that the fragrance overflows its family: vanilla, sandalwood and amber pull it toward the oriental, hence classifications that hesitate between floral and amber.

Nez magazine places it among the ambers in a gourmand style and describes a vanillic, milky base where sandalwood surfaces.
