Laurent Bruyère
If you are a fragrance enthusiast, you may have heard of the book Formules Secrètes d’un Parfumeur, paying tribute to Laurent Bruyère. This work, written by Soraya Bouvier Feder, recounts his career, his creations, his inspiration and his disillusionments. It offers anecdotes about this extraordinary perfumer who passed away too soon, in 2008, joining a fragrant paradise.
Who was Laurent Bruyère?
Laurent Bruyère was a self-taught perfumer. He began working at Charabot, a Grasse-based creation house where he learned everything. Very quickly, he emerged as a passionate perfumer and a hard worker. He then joined the great house IFF, a giant of the perfume industry, absorbing the valuable advice of Dominique Ropion. Later, he moved to Mane where he became senior perfumer before completing his career at Robertet. In fact, he confided that it was these encounters that had shaped his passion: those with Loris Azzaro, Anne-Marie Saget, Jean-Paul Guerlain's assistant, with Jean-Paul Guérin himself, or with Marie-Rose, his favorite laboratory technician at Charabot. Likewise, he was also deeply inspired by other creators such as Olivier Cresp, Jacques Cavallier, and Michel Almairac.
The profession's recognition of Laurent Bruyère
When Jean-Michel Duriez, perfumer at Rochas, speaks of Laurent Bruyère, he says in the preface to the book Formules Secrètes d’un Parfumeur: I remember so many things about Laurent: his thirst for learning, his need to charm, his quest for recognition, his delusions of grandeur, his excesses, his infinite kindness, his sincere friendships, his pure loves, his beauty, his success with women, with men, his humor… This is how Laurent Bruyère was perceived by the profession. Full of joie de vivre, he always remained available to those who asked him to explain the magic of his fragrances, describing it with great authenticity and a candor that was uniquely his own. He said he was fascinated by being able to work with molecules and materials that did not exist in the time of Jacques Guerlain.
Today, Laurent Bruyère is no longer with us. He passed away in 2008, at the age of 43, leaving behind a colossal body of work woven through with numerous successes, many of which were created in collaboration with the talented Dominique Ropion.
