Where to buy
At that time, the horse was the main means of transportation and the Hermès shop enjoyed phenomenal success, especially after the 1867 world's fair. Little by little, Hermès diversified and turned to leather goods and perfumery. After several olfactory successes, including Calèche, the house unveiled Amazone in 1974. A feminine fragrance evoking the horsewomen of nineteenth-century engravings.
Amazons, warriors with tender hearts
According to Greek mythology, the Amazons were a people of women warriors born of the union between Ares, god of war, and the nymph Harmonia. The Amazons inhabited a region east of the Black Sea. They defended their territory with the help of their horses, which they used as true soldiers. The name Amazon was later used in the nineteenth century to describe women of high society. These women wore voluminous dresses, and propriety did not allow them to ride a horse the way a man would. So they rode with both legs placed on the same side of the horse, giving rise to the expression to ride sidesaddle, or “monter à cheval en amazone”… Amazons were both very feminine and very spirited. In love with freedom, these women possessed great strength of character. The fragrance Amazone brings all of this together at once, and the Amazone woman is bold and assertive. Playful and spontaneous, the fragrance Amazone is thoroughly charismatic. It symbolizes a modern kind of freedom.
The green floral harmony of Amazone
Created by Maurice Maurin in 1974, Amazone is built around blackcurrant bud. Speaking of Amazone, Jean-Claude Ellena states that Amazone is a playful and smiling fragrance, brightened with flowers, red fruits and wood. Amazone opens with the invigorating note of bergamot, paired with the greenness of galbanum. They are quickly joined by jonquil, narcissus and tuberose. The heart is intensely fruity. It carries blackcurrant bud, accompanied by peach, mandarin and a touch of jasmine. The base is woody, ambery and slightly sensual. It is composed of sandalwood, amber, vetiver and cedarwood. The bottle is emblematic of the bottles in the Hermès classic line. Heavy and understated at once, it brings a final touch of elegance.
A highly feminine fragrance that honors the Amazons of the nineteenth century. Exceptional women of freedom and character, the Amazons were true warriors. Amazone is a fragrance of modern freedom. Its green floral composition is bold and endearing. It reminds today's women that they are strong and still just as beautiful.
