N°5 is the eau de parfum that Jacques Polge composed in 1986 for Chanel from Ernest Beaux's 1921 perfume, the first ever created for Gabrielle Chanel. An aldehydic floral bouquet built around rose and jasmine, citrus at the top, soft vanilla in the base, according to the house; Victoria Frolova hears in it the most assertive version of N°5. Victoria Frolova gives five stars to N°5 and describes the 1986 eau de parfum as the modern take on the classic: where the extract marries elegance and sensuality, the eau de parfum breathes, in her view, confidence and a bold beauty, with its creamy peach and amplified sandalwood, tinted with leather and incense.
She finds it sharper than the polish of the original, less aldehydic than the eau de toilette but crisper, and admits she long approached it with wariness before coming to love it: an elegance of trench coat and heels, she says, supple enough to go from morning to evening.
