Composition: the olfactory pyramid
Top: black cherry coulis & crunchy almond
The spray releases a candied black cherry coulis, underscored by a bitter almond reminiscent of a macaron shell. A thread of Calabrian bergamot brings the zesty spark that keeps things light and recalls the playful wink of the illustrated heroine.
Heart: double dose of rose & smoky black tea
The heart beats to the rhythm of two roses: the Bulgarian-Turkish rose absolute, deep and syrupy, and the Grasse rose essence, more petal-like and fresh. A smoky black tea accord — a nod to the tea houses of the Left Bank — brings a dark nuance, while a veil of licorice slips in a signature licorice sweetness.
Base: velvet patchouli, tonka bean & “Rouge Noir” amber accord
The base settles onto a heart patchouli polished of its earthy edges, wrapped in a toasted Venezuelan tonka bean. A “Rouge Noir” accord blends vanilla, benzoin and touches of leathery tobacco; it boldly extends longevity (approximately 12 hours on skin, over 24 hours on fabric).
Bottle: garnet-red inverted heart
A Guerlain icon since 1912: the inverted-heart silhouette, here in a red-to-black gradient, with a satin black pompom.
Originally designed for L'Heure Bleue, the inverted-heart bottle is now dressed in a garnet-to-black gradient recalling the sequin-embroidered mermaid dress. The pompom cord shifts from matte black to a grosgrain ribbon. Refillable: the pump unscrews to accommodate the 200 ml refill, reducing glass used by 46% over three refills.
Advertising campaign
Directed by the duo Kuntzel & Deygas, the new animation shows La Petite Robe Noire crossing an illuminated nighttime Paris: she glides across a piano bar, sips a black espresso, then dives into a fountain of candied cherries before emerging haloed in sequins. Jazzy soundtrack, Cherry My Night. Handwritten tagline: I am the Night Dress.
Review & verdict
La Petite Robe Noire Absolue heightens the syrupy-cherry facet of the original, while bringing an amber-leathery depth that suits it to cool evenings, hushed restaurants and autumn getaways. On warm skin, the cherry turns almost kirsch-like; in cool weather, the rose unfolds a sophisticated frosted-petal side. Generous projection for two hours, then a velvety halo that subtly clings to silk scarves. Ideal for those who found the classic EDP too light and are looking for a couture sillage, but gourmand — the olfactory equivalent of a black dress embroidered with ruby-red sequins.
