It was not until the early twentieth century that Thierry Hermès's descendants ventured into leather goods. In 1937, the famous “Hermès scarf” propelled the house into the spotlight. Eau d’Hermès is the house’s first perfume, launched in 1951. For Jour d’Hermès, released in 2012, the house wanted an ultra-feminine fragrance, built around a powerful floral bouquet.

The construction of Jour d’Hermès

The story of Jour d’Hermès began three years before its release. The house of Hermès wanted a feminine fragrance that could meet with as much success as the masculine Terre d’Hermès. Jean-Claude Ellena, the house’s perfumer, was given the demanding task of this composition. While everyone agreed that a very luminous juice was needed, the perfumer did not know which fragrances to choose. Since flowers are the essence of femininity, Jean-Claude Ellena then had the idea of composing an unprecedented juice built around a very powerful floral bouquet: sweet pea because it is an outdoor flower, gardenia because it is an indoor flower. The paradox and duality of Jour d’Hermès stemmed from this. But that was not enough for this great perfumer, who wanted to bring together many flowers. He envisioned a powerful, irresistible bouquet, for the pleasure of each person. On this, he said he wanted to convey armfuls of flowers, so that everyone could put in it the flowers they wanted, and smell whatever they wished to smell...

The floral bouquet of Jour d’Hermès

While Hermès did not really wish to communicate the details of the ingredients, it is known that gardenia, the central note, is very present in Jour d’Hermès. The opening can be guessed at as green and citrus. Then the heart becomes extremely floral. The base leans woodier thanks to oakmoss and slightly musky through musky notes. The bottle is understated. Rectangular, it has rounded corners. Its golden juice is set off by a white cap. The gardenia flower, very present in Jour d’Hermès, is the quintessence of femininity. It is at once sun-kissed, unsettling and complex. This ultra-floral bouquet allows everyone to breathe in the flower of their choice.

To exalt feminine sensuality, Hermès chose flowers. A bouquet of contrasting flowers is the strength of Jour d’Hermès. Here, each woman can smell the flower she loves to breathe in, and lose herself in it. With this sublime composition, Hermès wanted to assert an extreme femininity, the quintessence of femininity.
