Polo

Polo, launched by Ralph Lauren in 1978, is the house’s first men’s fragrance, signed by Carlos Benaïm. This eau de toilette, which its fans call Polo Green after the color of its bottle, opens on pine, thyme and basil, makes leather and tobacco leaf its heart and rests on patchouli, oakmoss and incense.

Kevin, of Now Smell This, likes Polo from start to finish: an opening of freshly pruned vegetation, a heart of aromatic salve and a base of musky talc softened by cedar.

What critics say

Kevin, Now Smell This

On November 7, 2007, Kevin discovers Polo without ever having worn it or smelled it on anyone close to him. He finds in it the smell of a garden pruned far too severely: grass, daisies and dandelions, crushed juniper berries, green wood and waxy pine needles, with their sap.

Halfway through, an apothecary green emerges for him, as if the juice of all these plants had been blended into a petroleum jelly base to make an aromatic balm. A silky, slightly musky talc finally joins a mellow cedar.

He likes Polo from start to finish and praises a freshness that holds all the way to the base. Next to Polo Explorer, he judges the original, nearly thirty years old, energetic and alive. In 2012, Now Smell This lists it among fifty masculine fragrances every perfume lover should try.
