Gris Dior is the unisex eau de parfum that François Demachy composed in 2013 for La Collection Privée Christian Dior, launched under the name Gris Montaigne. A chypre for the house, which reads into it the couturier's favorite color: citrus, rose, violet and oakmoss in an indissociable whole. Victoria Frolova smells wood shavings soaked in rosewater. In 50, 100 and 200 ml, with an Esprit de Parfum.

Where to buy

Dior ranks Gris Dior among its chypres and makes it the flagship piece of La Collection Privée: a unisex fragrance that unfolds in turn its floral and woody facets, a mysterious chypre sillage punctuated with citrus, rose, violet and oakmoss, reflecting the color whose name it bears.

Christian Dior's gray

The perfumer's word, at Dior, recalls that gray, more than a mixture of black and white, was one of Christian Dior's favorite colors, an elegant neutrality that enhances the other colors in the background of a runway show. The former French page quotes François Demachy: chypre is the gray of the perfume family.

Victoria Frolova, on Bois de Jasmin, opens with the Petit dictionnaire de la mode where Dior names gray and pink as his two favorite colors, those of his first boutique on Avenue Montaigne; Gris Montaigne is for her its romantic homage. Gaia Fishler reviewed it in April 2014 under this name.

From Gris Montaigne to Gris Dior

Kafkaesque dates it to June 2013; The Non-Blonde still calls it Gris Montaigne in 2014. The house now names it Gris Dior, without dating the change, and extends it into an Esprit de Parfum signed Francis Kurkdjian, a hair mist, soap and body milk, and a couture box in summer 2026.

Olfastory’s review

Frolova (Bois de Jasmin) smells wood shavings soaked in rosewater, polished and memorable; Fishler (The Non-Blonde) a dry chypre, elegant on a man.
