Eau Sauvage Cologne

Eau Sauvage Cologne appeared in 2015, signed François Demachy. The title refers to an older form: before Eau Sauvage paved the way in 1966, men relied mainly on eaux de cologne. This flanker revives that spirit, lighter and more lemony than the eau de toilette from which it derives.

A form, not a concentration level

The word cologne first denotes a balance: plenty of citrus, a reduced base, rapid evaporation. By giving this name to its flanker, Dior thus announces a register, not a concentration weaker or stronger than that of the eau de toilette.

The form dates back to the eighteenth century and to the water developed in the city of Cologne by a perfumer who had come from Italy. Its principle, an accord of citrus and aromatic plants over a light base, has crossed the centuries almost unchanged. It is this principle that the house invokes here, not a particular recipe.

Citrus held together by vetiver

The top note combines bergamot from Calabria, grapefruit and mandarin. The heart remains clear, carried by hedione, with petitgrain and galbanum contributing a green, slightly bitter facet, and pink pepper adding a dry point. The base, deliberately thin, relies on vetiver alone, enough to ground the composition without pulling it toward the woody register.

This choice has a direct consequence on usage. The frankness of the opening and the lightness of the base make it a warm-season flanker, whereas the 1966 composition suits the whole year.

A loop closed back to 1966

The parallel with the original is not merely a catalogue argument. Eau Sauvage was born in a masculine landscape dominated by colognes, from which it had set itself apart by introducing hedione. Giving it a cologne version nearly fifty years later amounts to returning to the starting point, with the means of contemporary perfumery.

Its place in the line

The Eau Sauvage line includes several flankers: Fraîcheur Cuir in 2007, Extrême in 2010, Parfum in 2012, Cologne in 2015. Each one shifts a dial, toward leather, toward wood, toward resin, here toward citrus. Sauvage, launched the same year as this Cologne, belongs to another line and has no formulaic connection to it.

François Demachy joined Dior in 2006 and remained its perfumer-creator until 2021, the year Francis Kurkdjian arrived.
