Eau d'Hermès
Eau d’Hermès: the very first perfume from the house of Hermès. In the 1950s, while the sublime house of Hermès was offering its bags and leather luggage across the world, Jean-René Guerrand-Hermès, then director of the house, commissioned a perfume from perfumer Edmond Roudnitska.

Where to buy
This perfume was meant to be the signature and emblem of Hermès leathers around the world; it was launched in 1951 as Eau d’Hermès. Sold as a precious treasure, it would take until the new millennium for Eau d’Hermès to become more widely available and open up to a broad audience. What a magnificent olfactory discovery this perfume of travel and luggage is! It reveals itself without doubt as landscapes unfold to the rhythm of an Orient Express...
Eau d’Hermès, kept confidential for 50 years, opened up to the public in 2000!
The house of Hermès was born from the skilled hands of Thierry Hermès in 1837. From its establishment in Paris at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in 1837, the founder’s grandson made his fortune offering leather bags and trunks just as the automobile was emerging and making travel easier than ever. Within a few decades, the house of Hermès built an empire on luxury leather goods. However, the venerable house was still missing one string to its bow: perfumery.
Thanks to the wonderful perfume by Edmond Roudnitska, Eau d’Hermès, the name and prestige of the brand traveled as well. However, it was decided that this very first Eau d’Hermès perfume would only be sold in 500 numbered pieces each year. So Eau d’Hermès adorned itself in its finest crystal attire, presenting each time a new design that would turn heads. Yet, ultimately, while the perfume was prestigious, hardly anyone truly knew it!
In 2000, riding the great comeback of Eaux in perfumery, Hermès released Eau d’Hermès in a bottle available to a wider public. The spicy leather could finally be discovered by our curious noses...
A citrus, leathery and spicy fragrance evoking travel: Eau d’Hermès
Eau d’Hermès is an intimate perfume, offered for only 50 years to the noses of the wealthiest Hermès customers. Each bottle of Eau d’Hermès is hand-numbered, and each year, particularly between 1993 and 2003, the bottle was dressed in themes chosen annually by the house.
While Eau d’Hermès opens with tangy, fresh notes of bergamot and lemon, do not be fooled — this is far from a classic cologne! At the heart, we discover warm, heady spicy notes of cinnamon, clove and cumin, carrying in their sillage delicate and elegant floral notes. This warm, piquant breath drifts into mysterious notes of tonka bean, oakmoss and patchouli. A leather note joins this beautiful sensuality, which now ventures, thanks to labdanum, into a surprising and generous animalic quality.
Eau d’Hermès is a perfume as prestigious as it is original. Far from the usual effects found in a fragrance composition of that era, Eau d’Hermès is the perfect leathery signature of the house. The creator did not hide the inspiration he drew from... the inside of a Hermès bag where the aroma of a perfume lingered... a note of fine leather wrapped in fresh citrus effluvia and heightened with spices, Hermès on Eau d’Hermès.
