Sun-kissed, warm and fresh, Dune is the exact opposite of Dior's previous great success, the venomous and sulfurous Poison, of course! As the avant-garde prototype of the fine fragrances of the new millennium, Dune is the breath of freshness everyone was waiting for.
Could pure Dune be the antidote to the famous Poison?
Lovely Dune was created under the influence of Maurice Roger, president of Dior from 1981 to 1996. For the president, it was no longer a matter of creating fragrances that evoked only the personal memories of their creator, but rather of opening a story and a concept that would be as universal as possible. Gone are the days when a small individual projected their own fantasies by dreaming of their schoolteacher's skirts, dreaming of the memory of their grandmother's wax-polish scent in her country house, or dreaming of that beautiful electric light at dawn after a wonderful night out, Maurice Roger stated when Poison was launched in 1985.
Dune would therefore be the child of this Maurice Roger era, in which what would much later be called storytelling became the founding and creative material of the new Dior fragrances. The story of Dune was meant to evoke a seaside parson's garden, in Brittany or Normandy, as was specified to the two perfumers tasked with creating it, Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Dominique Ropion. Yet the sandy material is rendered with such precision in the fragrance that one could almost touch it as much as smell it naturally—hence its name, Dune.
The Dune woman would be a woman at peace and soft, luminous and without pretense, in the same way that the very first advertisement for the fragrance was filmed. The light is soft, the material is sublimated and the sand feels caressing, the images are muted and the music soothing. This refined and highly streamlined aesthetic was a first for a fragrance; indeed, many subsequent advertising campaigns would draw inspiration from the natural beauty of these images.
Nature, purity and softness are the guiding words of this new Dior fragrance.
Dune, a rare oriental with a floral and green bouquet
Like a pretty, round and full amphora, the innovative bottle of Dune offers a soft, delicate amber color that hints at the colors of its juice.
From the very first notes, Dior and its perfumers achieve their usual feat of transporting the wearer into vegetal freshness through green notes and rosewood, while offering the tangy, tonic and invigorating brightness of mandarin and bergamot. This top-note ensemble already evokes an aquatic freshness, while, quite the novelty, no calone appears in the composition of Dune.
Then the heart of Dune reveals itself to the senses like an immense floral bouquet in which Dior's dexterity needs no proof. Between rose, jasmine and peony absolute among others, the raw materials of Dune vie with one another in elegance and natural beauty. Finally, sandalwood, benzoin and patchouli spread their sensual waves to remind us that the Dune woman is also an ultra-feminine woman, while remaining soft and wrapped in the sweetness of white musks and vanilla. As for oakmoss, it brings its modernity, offering a foretaste of woody feminine fragrances.
Dune, as recent Dior tradition dictates, was sumptuously named near those sand dunes of the Landes, whose virginity the wind, tirelessly, restores. As a vibrant tribute to the most beautiful of nature's creations, Dune offers a unique fragrant harmony that stands as innovative within a world still dominated by dizzying perfumes.
