White Diamonds

White Diamonds, an eau de toilette for women launched in 1991 by Elizabeth Taylor with Elizabeth Arden, is the work of Carlos Benaïm. Aldehydes, lily, neroli and citrus open onto a bouquet of tuberose, jasmine, rose, narcissus and ylang-ylang, set on sandalwood, oakmoss, patchouli, amber and musk. Its slender bottle wears a band of rhinestones beneath a golden cap.

Where to buy

Elizabeth Taylor launched White Diamonds in the fall of 1991 with the house of Elizabeth Arden, four years after Passion, her first fragrance. The actress toured American department stores to present it, and White Diamonds became one of the best sellers of its generation.

Carlos Benaïm composed the formula. The house credits the actress with a direct role in creating the fragrance as well as in designing its bottle, and says she named it after one of her great passions, white diamonds.

In 2009, the Fragrance Foundation inducted White Diamonds into its Hall of Fame at the FiFi Awards in New York. The eau de toilette comes in 30, 50 and 100 milliliters; the line also includes an eau de parfum, a parfum and variations such as Sparkling White Diamonds.

What critics say

Angela, writing for Now Smell This in 2011, expected a dated floral and found a soft, clean white floral chypre, which she finds easy to love without claiming to upend perfumery.

The advertising

Elizabeth Taylor at the poker table

The 1991 launch relied on a short film in which Elizabeth Taylor, covered in diamonds, bets one of her earrings at a poker table.

For the launch, Elizabeth Taylor played herself in a short film. Covered in diamonds, she watches a high-stakes poker game; when one player can no longer call, she tosses an earring into the pot, saying they have always brought her luck.

According to the house, Bruce Weber also photographed the actress for the first White Diamonds poster, in which she wears one of the diamonds given to her by Richard Burton, one of the two great loves of her life.
