Mandarina Corsica

Published

Mandarina Corsica is the Corsican stop of Les Paysages, signed by Quentin Bisch in 2018. The subject is not the maquis but a confection: the candied mandarin. The house names three materials for it, mandarin, immortelle and tonka bean, and the perfumer uses an integral mandarin, extracted from zest and flesh at once.

Three declared materials, a quality of mandarin that makes the whole subject, and a tiering that only a signed review sets out.

What the house declares

Mandarin, immortelle, tonka bean. The house glossary gives the species: Citrus reticulata for the citrus, Helichrysum italicum for the flower of the maquis, which in its words calls up sand warmed by the sun.

A fourth entry appears there, Saccharum officinarum, sugar cane, described as an amber and sugary dessert. That is what carries the boiled-sugar facet of the juice.

What the review says

The order is the one Clara Muller describes: mandarin opens, zest and flesh together, boiled sugar takes the upper hand without cloying, tonka bean brings its chocolate and almond facets, immortelle closes on a dry, salty note.

The coumarin of the tonka bean leaves, once the fruit has gone, a smell of toasted bread. The marine note is only a breath, and no material carries it by name.

What stays out

An excluded database serves a list of fifteen materials, with orange blossom, jasmine, cinnamon and sandalwood. The house does not name them, nor does the press at the launch: they stay out.
