Lacoste Original

Lacoste entered perfumery through Jean Patou, which marketed the brand’s fragrances under license. Jean Kerléo, Patou’s in-house perfumer from 1967, thus signed Lacoste Eau de Sport, one of the first fragrances bearing the crocodile.

Lacoste Original came out in 1984, still with the help of the house of Patou. Osmoz reports that the idea grew out of the friendship between René Lacoste and Jean Patou’s brother-in-law, and presents the fragrance as the first eau de toilette launched by a brand outside couture and perfumery.

In 2008, for the brand’s 75th anniversary, Lacoste brought Original back to the fore as its first men’s fragrance, under the line “All the Lacoste spirit in a bottle.” The brand has since given the Original name to a new line, including an eau de parfum launched in 2024.
