With simplicity as its watchword, built on relatively classic fougère accords, Lacoste succeeded this time, as Lacoste Original finally brought recognition to the brand's iconic crocodile in perfumery. Sporty and chic, Lacoste Original remains one of the house's great men's classics.

Lacoste Original: “All the Lacoste spirit in a bottle”

In 1968, after launching the fashion for pique cotton polo shirts and skirts, Lacoste decided to create fragrances in collaboration with Jean Patou. This is how Eau de Toilette Lacoste was born. However, too far removed from the famous sporty and chic brand's marketing target, the fragrance never found its audience, and it was a resounding commercial failure.

Somewhat held back by this poor experience, the Lacoste house waited until 1984 to launch another fragrance, which would be named Lacoste Original. This time, no marketing innovation, no extravagance, no boldness. Lacoste Original was meant to be the fragrance that suited the man already devoted to polo shirts and other clothing from the brand. The bottle, like the visual, is deeply marked by the codes and values of the label, which signed its campaign for Lacoste Original with a very clear slogan: “All the Lacoste spirit in a bottle”. Customers were not thrown off balance when smelling this new Lacoste fragrance, a fine creation by Jean Kerléo.

This Lacoste Original fragrance is now so emblematic of the fashion house that it was chosen to be reissued in 2008 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the green crocodile brand.

Lacoste Original, or the reassuring fougère, the safe bet of men's fragrances

In order to offer a fragrant composition that matched, in every respect, the color codes and main lines of the clothing collection, the Lacoste Original bottle is tinted white and green while offering a very sporty and very masculine square opulence. Naturally, the brand's logo is also featured prominently in the foreground of the bottle.

Lacoste Original opens with aromatic notes of basil and lavender mixed with sparkling lemon to create an ultra-toned and radiant opening. Then carnation and jasmine bring a floral “originality” to the heart of Lacoste Original, punctuated by a few geranium notes to reinforce the toned power. Finally, tree moss, vetiver and tonka bean offer magnificent woody power, although the 2008 version had to rework the animalic facets of coumarin and oakmoss, now banned.

This Lacoste Eau de Toilette, fresh and invigorating, resolutely optimistic, will appeal to all men seeking a fragrance that is both sporty and elegant. Lacoste, on Lacoste Original. Lacoste Original is thus a refined and elegant men's fragrance without any particularly flashy scents. Is that the reason for this success, which has not faded for decades?
