Since then, the choice was made to put the designer's two greatest fragrances back in the spotlight, and to refocus mainly on their worldwide renown. Indeed, since their respective releases in 1993 and 1995, Le Classique and Le Mâle have not stopped making headlines! Even today, they are reinventing themselves and giving rise to a new duo named La Belle and Le Beau. Chivalry demands it: let us take a closer look at the feminine essence from Jean-Paul Gaultier…
La Belle, absolute essence of femininity
To better understand the world of La Belle by Jean-Paul Gaultier, it helps to revisit the history of the previous Le Classique. The idea of designing a fragrance with a bottle shaped like a female bust comes from a distant memory of Jean-Paul Gaultier. One day, as a child, he found a corset at the bottom of an old trunk belonging to his grandmother, a person to whom he was infinitely attached! As if to pay her tribute, while also symbolizing absolute femininity, he decided to draw inspiration from this vintage garment to design a perfume bottle. Since then, the corset has become an iconic piece of his collection. Today, once again recalling this memory, Jean-Paul Gaultier has chosen to reveal to us the image of a strong and charismatic woman, clearly playing in the register of sensuality. The woman who wears La Belle is bold. She is a seductress at heart who already promises to leave no one indifferent!
La Belle by Jean-Paul Gaultier, a smooth flavor in a flamboyant red bottle
As if to enhance the femininity of his fragrance, Jean-Paul Gaultier slightly modified the bottle. Thus, La Belle comes in a finely sculpted glass case, whose hips are now more pronounced, the waist more slender, and the bust more generous. Likewise, revealing all the passion it holds at its heart, La Belle is now adorned with a dazzling red color. A touch of refinement has been added to its neck. Indeed, La Belle is now decorated with a necklace of finely sculpted roses. Nevertheless, boldly, Jean-Paul Gaultier once again chose to present this fragrance in a box shaped like a tin can. This rather offbeat choice fits perfectly with its world!
To craft its olfactory formula, Jean-Paul Gaultier called on two renowned perfumers: Quentin Bisch and Sonia Constant. They chose to use three main ingredients. Pear gives this fragrance a fruity, juicy, and airy breath. Vetiver, on the other hand, contrasts the whole and gives it more depth and power. Finally, its woody flavor is paired with a sultry vanilla note that only amplifies the smooth aspect of this scent.

The advertising
La Belle and Le Beau in their imaginary advertising garden!
When Jean-Paul Gaultier created his very first fragrance in the early 1980s, he wanted it to reflect himself, between a love of retro powdery notes and ultra-sensual feminine modernity, and thus Classique was born in 1993. Then Le Mâle also managed to distill this bold blending of eras into a masculine scented world never seen before. In advertising, the pair of fragrances would create sparks and every new campaign would be an event. Naturally, when Le Beau and La Belle, the scented children of Classique and Le Mâle, were born on screen, their world offered us a thousand and one surprises once again.
La Belle and Le Beau shed their innocence in their advertising campaign!
The doors of Jean-Paul Gaultier's La Factory open once again onto the lovely young lady of Classique, who will be our guide throughout this new campaign for Le Beau and La Belle. We thus enter the imaginary fragrance workshop of Jean Paul Gaultier, admiring the Le Mâle sailors sweating body and water on their boats to help the Classique young ladies move the gears forward. Yet, while the sailors seem devoted to their task, the charming and glamorous young ladies do not make it easy for them! Then it is the Classique young lady and the Le Mâle sailor who together take back control of operations by activating the enormous lever that will launch the bottle chains, before the doors of Jean-Paul Gaultier's realm reveal a new world to us.
And there we come face to face with the lovely Classique young lady, now become La Belle. The young lady, scarcely dressed except for flowers covering the bare minimum, lies languidly on a carpet of flowers and leaves in shimmering colors.
Then we leave this lovely “Eve” to discover Le Mâle, also transformed for the occasion into “Adam,” or rather into Le Beau. Covered only by a vine leaf, Le Beau lies in the middle of nature, surrounded by beautiful red velvet cushions matching perfectly with this bucolic setting.
These two tableaux finally give way to the two new fragrance bottles Le Beau and La Belle, appearing on our screens like subjects of a master's painting.
The bucolic and offbeat world of the advertisement for Le Beau and La Belle
This 2019 campaign for La Belle and Le Beau naturally cannot help but recall, through its opening images, the one filmed in 2016 named La Factory, where we got to know the lovely Classique young lady and her Le Mâle sailor. As a result, we can easily imagine that this advertisement for Le Beau and La Belle was filmed by the same Barcelona-based advertising collective, the Dvein collective.
Moreover, we find in this campaign the famous soundtrack of all the Classique-Le Mâle advertisements, this piece of Casta Diva from Bellini's opera in its new remix, which we already discovered in 2016.
It thus seems clear that the aim was to bring the new couple Le Beau and La Belle closer to the original Le Mâle-Classique bottles, though their offbeat reference to the legend of the Garden of Eden adds its touch of surprise to this lovely campaign.
Chris Bunn and Daphne Groeneveld, ambassadors for Le Beau and La Belle
Jean-Paul Gaultier is a talent scout, so fond is he of showcasing strong personalities and unconventional looks in his shows as well as in his advertisements. For his Le Mâle-Classique couple in 2016 in La Factory, the designer had bet on Chris Bunn, a young model in his twenties, and a Dutch top model only 21 years old, Daphné Groeneveld.
We therefore have the pleasure of finding these two figures again in 2019 with Le Beau and La Belle, now famous and a little older, without having lost any of their respective charms, quite the contrary!
The exotic and sensual scented compositions of Le Beau and La Belle
Both composed by Sonia Constant and Quentin Bisch, La Belle and Le Beau are meant to be reinterpretations of Le Mâle and Classique, as we have well understood. However, the two perfumers kept certain traits of their predecessors while playing at making us lose our olfactory bearings, only to create new ones.
Thus Le Beau retains its architecture built on warm-cold contrasts but adds a touch of exoticism in its coconut heart, and La Belle lets us discover the delights of a woody heart, all the better to bewitch us with an intense vanilla, ultimately quite far removed from Classique.
From Classique to La Belle, from Le Mâle to Le Beau, the evolution of Jean-Paul Gaultier campaigns
Since Classique's very first appearance on our screens in 1993, Jean Paul Gaultier's advertising campaigns have been events, especially since the beauty in the corset was joined by her Le Mâle in wonderfully far-fetched stories.
It is true that the meeting between the famous film director Jean-Baptiste Mondino and the designer created sparks and advertising campaigns that made history, yet with The Factory the house opened a new advertising chapter in 2016 by calling on other directors.
La Belle and Le Beau, a whimsical and humorous nod, very Jean-Paul Gaultier
Once again, with Le Beau and La Belle, it is clear that the offbeat spirit of fashion's enfant terrible endures, despite the end of his beautiful collaboration with Mondino. The man has always known how to pair a taste for sensual provocation with humor; the least one can say is that La Belle, like Le Beau, display such boldness in their nudity that it is impossible to escape it!
