Launched by Lalique in 2006, Encre Noire is a vetiver signed by Nathalie Lorson: cypress opens, two vetivers, from Bourbon and Haiti, form the body, cashmere wood and musks the base. The black bottle, capped in wood, refers to an inkwell by René Lalique. Victoria Frolova would make it her only vetiver.
Lalique builds Encre Noire around vetiver. Cypress gives it a fresh, woody opening; the body pairs Bourbon vetiver with Haitian vetiver; cashmere wood and musks wrap it at the base. The press kit adds a fraction of vetiver from the top.
Two vetivers
The house sets the mysterious notes of the two vetivers against the warm, enveloping notes of cashmere wood and musks. Victoria Frolova describes vetiver by its accents of licorice, bitter grapefruit peel, smoke and damp earth, all present in Encre Noire in her view.
What the label declares
The ingredient list published by Lalique has only eight entries: alcohol, parfum, water and five regulated allergens, hexyl cinnamal, limonene, linalool, isoeugenol and citral. It carries neither UV filter nor colorant.
