Where to buy

It was thus that he created a first fragrance for women named L’Eau d’Issey. This juice was followed, in 1994, by a masculine counterpart. It is precisely a reinterpretation of this fragrance that Issey Miyake now offers. Focus on L’Eau Majeure d’Issey, a fragrance capable of transporting us with a single breath to the middle of the oceans.

The story of L’Eau d’Issey

The first version of L’Eau d’Issey was intended for women. Nevertheless, it was soon followed by a masculine version. This fragrance was then in perfect harmony with Issey Miyake's approach. Indeed, the designer has always sought to challenge conventions and follow no trend. Issey Miyake likes to create his own style and respond to the needs of his contemporaries. Thus, he creates fragrances suited to our active lifestyle. These are at once fiery, authentic and modern, letting an invigorating breath flow into our daily lives. L’Eau Majeure d’Issey is no exception to the rule and remains particularly faithful to Issey Miyake's values of simplicity, obviousness and authenticity. This new juice is intended for today's man of action, at once young at heart, comfortable in his body and enjoying displaying his masculinity without ever becoming provocative.

The aquatic recipe of L’Eau Majeure d’Issey

The first version of L’Eau d’Issey was likened to the sensation of the strength and freshness of a mountain torrent. This time, L’Eau Majeure d’Issey transports us to an entirely different place. It is more a matter of a maritime atmosphere. This men's fragrance, at once fresh and powerful, retains its aquatic breath while giving it a saltier facet, as if straight from the sea. L’Eau Majeure d’Issey opens with an intense freshness from a duo of bergamot and grapefruit. This soft bitterness is then relayed by an aquatic and salty scent. Finally, everything rests on a woodier and more masculine sillage, wrapped in the softness of cashmere wood. The result is a very balanced juice, both invigorating and authentic, perfect to accompany the daily life of today's men.

Issey Miyake's new bottle

As for the bottle, L’Eau Majeure d’Issey takes up the design of its predecessors. Its new bottle has kept the imposing shape of its elder while adopting more rounded angles. This gives the whole a more contemporary feel and also makes this new bottle easier to hold. L’Eau Majeure d’Issey is still topped with an imposing glacier-gray cap. This cap is in perfect harmony with the new gray hue of this juice. Silver lettering, meanwhile, displays its name on the front face. The whole proves to be particularly elegant.

Olfastory’s review

Our review of the fragrance L’Eau Majeure L’Eau Majeure d’Issey Miyake was released in 2017, and resembles a sea breeze. Like its predecessor L’Eau d’Issey, L’Eau Majeure references the scent of water, and pays tribute to this element indispensable to life. Going entirely against the trends of its time, L’Eau Majeure positions itself as the masculine counterpart to L’Eau d’Issey. Free and inventive, the composition of L’Eau Majeure sits at the crossroads of the Western and Eastern worlds. A woody aquatic, L’Eau Majeure is shaped by water.

The advertising

This fall 2017, the least one can say is that men have been spoiled when it comes to olfactory novelties. Among the most anticipated juices of the season, L’Eau Majeure d’Issey ranks in a strong position. Its creator, Issey Miyake, invites us to discover its scent, directly inspired by water. Indeed, Issey Miyake has always made this natural element his source of inspiration. He sees in it a symbol of masculine strength and perpetual movement. It is precisely this blend of fire and serenity that is found in the new advertisement for L’Eau Majeure d’Issey.

The fragrance L’Eau Majeure d’Issey in a few words…

As always, with L’Eau Majeure d’Issey, Issey Miyake has placed water at the center of his composition. Indeed, this natural element is the designer's main source of inspiration. He sees in it our unique source of life as well as a particularly changeable and fascinating material. After all, what other element than water can move from soothing clarity to blazing fire? Water is all of these at once: that of a mountain torrent, that of a lake, a plain, a raging ocean. Here, L’Eau Majeure d’Issey carries us into the heart of the ocean. As one might expect, this is thus a saltier and more fiery fragrance than before. L’Eau Majeure d’Issey opens with an intense freshness from a combination of bergamot and grapefruit. This bitterness is followed by a saltier aquatic accord. Finally, the masculinity of this juice takes over in a woodier and enveloping sillage of cashmere wood.

Yugo Nakamura, director of the L’Eau Majeure d’Issey Miyake campaign

To bring his new fragrance to life visually, Issey Miyake called on the Japanese Yugo Nakamura. This illustrious figure in the field of design studied architecture and engineering before turning more toward landscape design. He has already exhibited his works around the world and particularly in Europe, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the Vienna Künstlerhaus in Vienna, and at the Design Museum in London. His works have also received numerous international awards, including a Cannes Lions, a One Show, a Clio Award and an NY ADC, to name but a few. As one might expect, Issey Miyake left nothing to chance in showcasing his new fragrance.

The television commercial for L’Eau Majeure d’Issey

To showcase L’Eau Majeure d’Issey, Issey Miyake called on no ambassador. Its fragrance speaks for itself. The advertisement for this juice clearly highlights Issey Miyake's favorite material: water. Here it is explosive and manages to create unexpected shapes, even going so far as to trace on its surface the name L’Eau Majeure d’Issey. Likewise, the other indispensable element of this advertisement is none other than the bottle of L’Eau Majeure d’Issey. It is on its silhouette that this television commercial closes. Designed by Todd Bracher, it is a very elegant vessel, with an architectural and modern silhouette, a striking purity and a very contemporary blue-gray lacquer finish.
