By Man Re-Edition 1997 brings back in 2026 the men’s fragrance Dolce & Gabbana launched in 1997, in its zebra-print bottle. The formula is by Alberto Morillas. Nutmeg and black pepper open the composition, lavender and mugwort form its heart, and amber and guaiac wood its base: a spicy amber, sold in a 100 ml bottle.
Elena Knezevic, of Fragrantica, believes the re-edition is faithful to the original, but finds this lukewarm, barely sweet woody scent stuck in its decade and now unremarkable; she prefers Masculine Re-Edition 1999.
What critics say
Elena Knezevic, Fragrantica, September 2026
Elena Knezevic remembers loving By Man when it came out, a fashionable and widely worn fragrance. She considers the re-edition probably as accomplished as the original, but feels the scent has stayed frozen in its decade and now seems rather dull.
She finds in it a warm woody note, slightly sweet, as if bathed in sunlight. She likens it to Yohji 1996 by Yohji Yamamoto, which she judges more accomplished, and sees only a faint link with Le Male. The tobacco nuance reminds her of a hot iron; she recommends Masculine Re-Edition 1999 instead.
