Barénia Intense

Barénia Eau de Parfum Intense was released in August 2025, a year after the first feminine chypre from Hermès. Christine Nagel reprises the Barénia palette — butterfly lily, miracle berry, oakwood, patchouli absolute — and writes into it leathery notes that point back to the saddlery leather the line is named for.

Hermès put Barénia Eau de Parfum Intense on sale on August 1, 2025, eleven months after Barénia. Both fragrances borrow their name from one of the calfskins of the house, used in saddlery as well as in leather goods.

Christine Nagel directs olfactory creation at Hermès and signed both. Barénia was the first feminine chypre of the house; the perfumer knows the register, having composed For Her for Narciso Rodriguez and Sì for Giorgio Armani, two landmarks of the neo-chypre.

The official list barely moves. Hermès gives back butterfly lily, patchouli absolute and oak, and adds leathery notes that the description of the first Barénia did not carry. The house announces heightened intensity and sensuality.

Christine Nagel reports that she was after the sensation of Barénia leather itself, the one craftsmen describe as returning a caress. The leather stops being a metaphor: its presence, she says, “becomes physical, almost tactile.”

The line launched in September 2024 with a film directed by James Gray, fronted by the model Malgosia Bela, and the signature “Skin is a scent.”
