Perfumer Maurice Roucel imagines Tocade, an extraordinary luminosity
To create Tocade, the house of Rochas chose Maurice Roucel as perfumer. He began his career in 1973 by joining Chanel as a chemist. After a stint at Quest and at IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances), Maurice Roucel was hired by Symrise in 1996. Maurice Roucel has received several awards throughout his career, such as the Prix François Coty and the French Fragrance Oscar. When asked what the main qualities of a perfumer are, Maurice Roucel states that to excel in this profession, two innate qualities are needed that cannot be learned: creativity and passion. Maurice Roucel is responsible for great perfumes such as Insolence by Guerlain, Hypnose Homme by Lancôme, and 24 Faubourg by Hermès.
Tocade, irresistibly bold perfumed notes
Tocade opens with a citrus floral pairing featuring magnolia and bergamot. Magnolias are among the most beautiful spring-flowering trees. Originally from the Far East, magnolias were brought to France (in Loire-Atlantique) by René Darquistade in 1711. It would take until 1764 for François Bonamy, Director of the Nantes botanical garden, to identify the tree as a magnolia grandiflora. In the language of flowers, magnolia symbolizes fidelity and carries a message of cheerfulness. In perfumery, magnolia gives off a soft floral scent with vanilla and lemony accents. Then, the heart of Tocade is charged with romance and elegance through the presence of rose, geranium, jasmine and vanilla. Geranium takes its name from the Greek geranos, meaning crane, referring to the flower's appearance. It is recognizable by its 5 petals. Geranium is the quintessential balcony flower. With its many colors, geranium beautifies balconies. In perfumery, geranium essential oil is used. It is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves and stems before flowering. Geranium gives off rosy, minty and lemony tonalities. Finally, the base of Tocade is as sensual as it is enveloping, combining tonka bean, patchouli, cedar and iris. The precious nectar is held in a bottle shaped like a feminine amphora. It is then topped with a red cap shaped like a pointed hat. The whole gives a colorful and bold bottle, in keeping with the composition.
