Matière Noire is one of the seven perfumes with which Louis Vuitton returned to perfumery in September 2016, all signed by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. The house sets two dark woods, patchouli and agarwood, brightened by blackcurrant, against the whiteness of narcissus and jasmine. The critic Kafkaesque smelled mostly narcissus in it, and almost none of the announced oud.

Louis Vuitton entrusted the bottles of its 2016 collection to the Australian designer Marc Newson. He made them minimalist versions of apothecary vials, in heavy glass, closed with a metal cap stamped with the LV initials; the transparent base reveals a slightly purple juice.
Matière Noire is sold in 100 and 200 ml, and in a travel spray filled with four 7.5 ml refills. The bottle can be refilled in the house’s boutiques equipped with a perfume fountain.
For collectors, Louis Vuitton also offers a one-liter Flacon d’Exception in Baccarat crystal, designed by Marc Newson, presented under a glass bell on a natural leather base made in the house’s workshops.
