Aurélien Guichard

Aurélien Guichard decided five years ago to put his feet back in the soil of Tourette near Grasse, to perpetuate the tradition of the seven generations of perfumers who preceded him. And to plant Centifolia rose bushes there, while penetrating the secrets of the producer's craft in contact with the men and women of the art, grafters, pruners and pickers. A long path for this Grasse native through and through, raised in Paris by a perfumer-creator father and a sculptor mother, a student at the Givaudan perfumery school in 1999. The day I walked in, I discovered perfumery, and it became my whole life. Fourteen years later, he left for Firmenich, and in May 2018, joined Takasago. The perfumer-creator juggles between the city and the land, with the same happiness, and this immeasurable desire to share and to pass on.

My olfactory memory

As a teenager, helping a friend of my parents remove her coat. The encounter with the fragrance, which made her immediately desirable. That day, I realized that there was magic in certain perfumes.

The Mediterranean in spring, the season when nature awakens and is reborn.

My favorite raw materials

Woods in the feminine: like cypriol, mysterious, powerful, dark.

Flowers in the masculine: like Grasse Centifolia rose, for the emotional weight it carries and the people who grow it.

Musks: masculine and feminine.

While perfume houses are now numerous on the market, it must be acknowledged that France enjoys an exceptional heritage in this field. In fact, the world capital of perfume is located in Grasse, in the Provence region. As a result, many people living there work in the world of scents. And it is precisely there that Aurélien Guichard was born. Perfumery seems almost written into his DNA. A look back at the path of this perfumer destined to become world famous.

Aurélien Guichard, or a childhood spent among scents

Like many recognized noses, Aurélien Guichard comes from a line of perfumers. Indeed, he embodies the seventh generation of perfumers in his family. In other words, he did not enter this profession by chance. His father, Jean Guichard, was even the director of the Givaudan perfumery school. Alongside his theoretical knowledge, his father spoke to him from earliest childhood about perfumery with an almost unconditional love. He sought to pass on his ethics to his son. As a result, his father quickly became a role model for him. Aurélien Guichard considers perfumery to be far more than a profession. He believes it is a way of life. For him, a good perfumer must be attentive to their surroundings. They must possess a certain sensitivity to others, generosity, and a sense of observation, whether of their era or of their clients. Furthermore, Aurélien Guichard admits that his mood invariably affects his compositions. When I was at perfumery school, he says, my teacher had one rule: you have to be happy. It is a profession of sharing. The nose is just a tool, a bit like the painter's hand. Yet the painter does not maintain his hand. It is his ideas that determine the quality of his work. Aurélien Guichard therefore practices his profession with happiness, and his joy of living can be felt in each of his creations.

Aurélien Guichard's inspiration

Unlike many perfumers, Aurélien Guichard states that his true inspiration does not come from travel. He believes it comes from people. All his creativity is grounded in exchange. In fact, his father, Jean Guichard, says he is fascinated by the exchanges he has with his son. As a result, Aurélien Guichard crafts fragrances as diverse as there are people in the world. Some of them contain a great many ingredients. Others, on the other hand, show extreme simplicity. For him, what matters in a fragrance is that the technique remains invisible and only the emotion comes through. According to his father, Aurélien Guichard's finest fragrance is Gucci Guilty, a scent he describes as complex and contemporary. However, this perfumer is responsible for many other creations. Among others, he took part in the development of the fragrances Love In Paris, L’Eau du Temps, Baghari, Play, Ricci Ricci and Narciso.
