DIOR Eau Sauvage Extrême

Eau Sauvage Extrême is a woody flanker of Eau Sauvage, relaunched by Dior in 2010 under the signature of François Demachy. The name had already been used in 1984 for a version now discontinued, which accounts for the conflicting pyramids one encounters. The 2010 version keeps the line's citrus and aromatic opening, but brings the cedar forward and rests the whole on vetiver. It shares no formula link with Sauvage, released in 2015.

Eau Sauvage Extrême appeared in 2010 under the signature of François Demachy. The name is not new: a first Eau Sauvage Extrême had been launched in 1984 before leaving the catalog for lack of an audience. The 2010 version reuses the name, but the formula was redone.

A name reused twenty-six years apart

Confusion between the two versions is common, and the pyramids found online often mix the two together. These are, however, two distinct compositions: the 1984 version belonged to the perfumery of its time, while the 2010 version was entirely recomposed on contemporary woody notes.

A citrus that shifts toward wood

The opening keeps the citrus and aromatic writing typical of the line, with lemon, lavender and basil. Cedar arrives earlier than in the original eau de toilette, supported by broom and by hedione, the molecule that had made Eau Sauvage a turning point in 1966. Vetiver anchors the base. The shift is clear: whereas the 1966 version keeps its clarity to the end, this one sinks into wood.

The word Extrême here refers to a matter of density rather than concentration. It is not the same eau de toilette served stronger, but a composition that shifts its center of gravity toward the lower part of the structure.

A bottle that does not change

The container itself does not change. Shaped like a glass flask, encircled by a band and topped with a cap in the form of a thimble, it has accompanied Eau Sauvage since 1966 and serves as the visual marker of the whole line. The Extrême version reuses this design in a dark shade.

Its place within the Eau Sauvage line

Eau Sauvage has given rise to several successive flankers: Fraîcheur Cuir in 2007, this Extrême in 2010, Eau Sauvage Parfum in 2012, Eau Sauvage Cologne in 2015. All rework, to varying degrees, Edmond Roudnitska's formula. Sauvage, launched the same year as the Cologne, does not belong to this group despite the similarity of names.

At its release, Eau Sauvage had Alain Delon as its face, and the house has long associated the fragrance with figures from French cinema. Reusing the name therefore also engages that advertising legacy, which partly explains the criticism leveled at these relaunches by enthusiast communities, who see them as a dilution of the heritage rather than an extension of it.

François Demachy had joined Dior in 2006 and remained its perfumer-creator until 2021.
