With Tonka Impériale (from the same collection) François Demachy had already created a surprise by offering a tonka bean as gourmand as it is bitter; with Cuir Cannage he succeeds in the wager of pairing sun-kissed, delicate flowers with leather and blond tobacco scents. He has said he drew inspiration for this boldness from the glove makers of Grasse, who slipped roses and jasmine into the precious leather of their gloves, so fine that a pair could fit inside a walnut shell.
