Leather, a raw material widely used by perfumers

Leather is a raw material of universal reach. Indeed, it has been used by men since the dawn of time for clothing. The craft of leatherworking has since remained a trade in its own right, one that requires a long apprenticeship and allows for the creation of a multitude of fine products. Between the Renaissance and the eighteenth century, leather was synonymous with refinement. Catherine de Médicis in fact wore scented gloves, and it was during this period that the fusion between perfumery and leather goods was created. This is also where the profession of glove-maker-perfumer originates. Guerlain's Cuir Intense thus pays tribute to this tradition. It evokes the aristocracy of old, the sensuality of women dressed in leather, and the virile power that a man exudes when wearing an accessory of this kind. Leather also gives rise, for many people, to a feeling tinged with nostalgia. For each of us, it evokes a memory or a person, recalling, for example, a motorcycle jacket or an old school bag, a jewelry box, a small handbag or a pair of pumps. Here, leather evokes a thousand-year-old tradition. It more specifically accentuates its oriental character and pays tribute to a part of the globe deeply cherished by the Guerlain family. Cuir Intense highlights the strength, suppleness and sensuality of leather. Smooth, it first reveals itself as gourmand through contact with osmanthus, whose scent is lightly apricot-like. Then it becomes more tenacious and woody through the presence of Virginia cedar. Cuir Intense is a captivating, deep and mysterious essence. Here, leather is clearly brought to the forefront, and Guerlain brilliantly reveals all the contrasts of this extraordinary raw material.
