Coromandel

Chanel launched Coromandel in 2007 in Les Exclusifs, as a tribute to the Chinese lacquer screens that lined Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment. Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake built an intense amber around patchouli, frankincense and benzoin. Victoria, of Bois de Jasmin, finds a dark, gourmand patchouli, elegant right down to its trail.

Chanel introduced Coromandel in 2007, in Les Exclusifs, its collection reserved for its boutiques and a few counters. Jacques Polge, then the house perfumer, signed it with Christopher Sheldrake.

Mademoiselle’s screens

The name comes from the Coromandel lacquer screens, adorned with Asian flowers, with which Gabrielle Chanel covered the walls of her Paris apartment. She used to say she nearly fainted with happiness when she discovered the first one in a Chinese shop.

Victoria, of Bois de Jasmin, recalls that the name also refers to India’s Coromandel Coast, through which Asian goods passed, patchouli included: Christopher Sheldrake made this leaf the pivot of the composition.

First offered as an eau de toilette, Coromandel is now sold as an eau de parfum, in 75 and 200 ml, with a body oil that extends its trail.
