La Couche du Diable

Serge Lutens imagines the smell of the devil's bedding... Who said that perfumery had to be a domain of tenderness and poetry? Serge Lutens is far from convinced of that, and does not hesitate to give transgressive and insolent names to his perfumes.

These inspirations are very often non-conformist. Serge Lutens masters the unconventional register better than anyone. While his perfumes rank among the most prestigious judges of the entire sector, Serge Lutens surprises with his provocation and his avant-gardism. Once again, he offers his mischievous and disconcerting vision of his craft and gives birth to a perfume named La Couche du Diable.

La Couche du Diable, welcome to the den of evil!

La Couche du Diable by Serge Lutens is a unisex perfume that can be worn by a man as much as by a woman. However, it is inevitably intended for people who are not faint of heart and who like to be surprised! Evoking absolute evil in a perfume — that took some daring! Well, Serge Lutens dared! It must be said that this is not his first attempt, and that the names of some of his fragrances are enough to send a chill down the spine: Baptême du Feu, Cannibale, Cracheuse de Flammes, and even L'incendiaire… Such is the dark and psychedelic world of Serge Lutens! To top it all off, the creator also pairs his creations with intriguing quotations. La Couche du Diable is described as follows: to summon the devil no longer implies hell. The Earth already provides for that. A blazing fire is no longer to my liking today. Preferring embers to flames, my remorse returns to the night, to which he adds, how does one invite oneself to Satan's coronation when the one he invites has not yet tasted sin? Oud and cistus compose here the bedding of a first remorse, as demonic as it is sumptuous. These few sentences leave one puzzled and wanting to learn more? Unfortunately, Serge Lutens is not in the habit of giving further details. He much prefers to leave the interpretation open to everyone!

The two major ingredients of La Couche du Diable

For once, Serge Lutens has actually been rather talkative… He left us a clue as to the composition of his new perfume. Thus, his fragrance is built around two main ingredients: oud wood and labdanum cistus. Oud wood makes La Couche du Diable a prestigious perfume, given that it is one of the most expensive and rarest raw materials in the perfumer's entire palette. This wood, sourced from Southeast Asia and India, gives rise to a highly fragrant and subtle aromatic resin. It lends La Couche du Diable a warm, woody nuance, somewhat evoking sandalwood. For a more amber effect, Serge Lutens added labdanum cistus, a more ambery and animalic ingredient, emblematic of oriental perfumes.
