Zadig et Voltaire was already a highly renowned luxury ready-to-wear house when it launched its first fragrances. Yet it took the famous This is Her and This is Him for the celebrated brand to earn its stripes in perfumery. However, before these two great successes, Patchou'Lait had managed to offer the brand's fans an original and robust composition. A composition that would see the light of day a second time in 2012, released as two fragrances, then a third time with Tome 1 La Pureté, this time unisex, released in 2017.

The story of the fragrance Tome 1 La Pureté, released in 2017, is far from the shortest of tales; on the contrary, it is the fragrant novel of an encounter between Zadig et Voltaire and its audience. A late encounter that took time to take root but which has now become self-evident.
Indeed, the composition of Tome 1 La Pureté from 2017 is the result of long compositional work by different perfumers that traces its roots back to 2009. At the time, the house's master, Thierry Gillier, wanted a first unisex and confidential scent between childhood and adolescence with the eloquent code name: Patchou'lait. But this blend of genres and contrasts between warm and cold did not hit its mark; Zadig & Voltaire, however, did not admit defeat.
In 2012, thanks to its partnership with Clarins, it was the talented Nathalie Lorson who this time composed two fragrances based on Thierry Gillier's famous Patchou'lait accord. One aimed to be very floral, Tome 1 La Pureté for Her, the other much woodier, Tome 1 La Pureté For Him. Yet both retained the same thread, that famous milk scent.
In 2017, in the form of a trilogy, Tome 1 La Pureté was reworked to become, once again, entirely faithful to its original 2009 juice. Just like Tome 2 L'Esprit Libre and Tome 3 l'Etre, Tome 1 La Pureté is presented as a unisex juice meant to be impertinent and contrasted.
Tome 1 La Pureté, or the encounter between a childlike milk scent and a powerful, sensual patchouli
As we have seen previously, Tome 1 La Pureté, released in 2017, has a long olfactory history. One might therefore legitimately think that this version of La Pureté, released in 2017, would be a condensed version of the work done in 2012 by Nathalie Lorson or in 2009 by the very first perfumer of Patchou'lait. Nevertheless, a rare occurrence in perfumery, we do not know the name of the creator of these three tomes of the Librairie Olfactive signed Zadig & Voltaire, so we are free to imagine its roots…
Moreover, the composition of this Tome 1 La Pureté, although carefully described in the original box of the bottle, remains relatively secretive in its details. On the other hand, the striking contrasts of this Tome 1 are clearly evoked, and it is not difficult to understand the olfactory contrasts intended by the creator of this fragrance.
Indeed, the bergamot in the top note displays a thoroughly youthful, almost adolescent energy. While at the heart, the famous milk note, reminiscent of childhood, is paired with a smooth, powerful and sensual patchouli. Finally, sandalwood wraps this Tome 1 La Pureté in its mysterious, enveloping aura, the better to be discovered by whoever comes to read it… or to smell it.
