Tobacco Vanille

Tobacco Vanille is one of the twelve unisex fragrances with which Tom Ford launched his Private Blend collection in March 2007, alongside Oud Wood, Tuscan Leather, Neroli Portofino and Noir de Noir. Now Smell This published the list as early as February 2, 2007.

Tom Ford reserved the collection for his new boutique on Madison Avenue in New York, Bergdorf Goodman and a selection of Saks and Neiman Marcus stores. At launch, the eau de parfum cost $165 for 50 ml and $450 for the 250 ml bottle.

A gentlemen’s club in London

The house presents Private Blend as Tom Ford’s personal scent laboratory, free from the conventions of mainstream perfumery and designed for connoisseurs. Its 2007 description casts Tobacco Vanille as a modern take on an old-world men’s club.

It links the idea to the designer’s affection for London and to an English gentlemen’s club filled with spices and cognacs. Tom Ford sees it as an opulent, warm fragrance, entirely masculine, the house adds, unless a woman wears it.

In Women’s Wear Daily, at the time of the announcement, Tom Ford summed up Tobacco Vanille in a single phrase: it smells like pipe tobacco. He presented the twelve creations as fully developed fragrances, not as simple variations on one material.

Olivier Gillotin

The composition is the work of Olivier Gillotin, trained at the Givaudan perfumery school. In 2022, when the American Society of Perfumers gave him its lifetime achievement award, Givaudan cited Tobacco Vanille among his landmark creations, alongside Polo Red, Higher and Tom Ford Noir.

Around the eau de parfum

Tom Ford also offers the scent as a body spray, which the house suggests layering over the eau de parfum. In 2026, Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Shyamala Maisondieu created a more intense version, Tobacco Vanille Parfum, with a whiskey barrel accord and an oak wood extract.
