Christine Nagel, the only perfumer behind Dolce & Gabbana's The One
To create this uniquely singular fragrance, Dolce & Gabbana chose Christine Nagel to bring it to life. Born in 1959 in Geneva, Christine Nagel first studied organic chemistry and then joined the Firmenich research laboratory. Her unusual path became her signature. She created her first fragrance notes under the direction of Michel Almairach, and her first major success was L'Eau de Cartier for Cartier, released in 2001. She then joined Givaudan and went on to create a string of successes such as For Her by Narciso Rodriguez and Miss Dior Chérie by Christian Dior. She enjoys creating chypre compositions with strong presence. Since 2016, Christine Nagel has been the creative director of olfactory creation for the house of Hermès, succeeding the celebrated Jean-Claude Ellena.
White flowers at the heart of The One
The One opens with a citrus-fruity blend thanks to the presence of bergamot, mandarin and peach, joined by the exotic touch of lychee. Also called the Chinese cherry, lychee has been grown in China for more than 4,000 years and was once considered the most refined of fruits. It was in 1724 that France introduced lychee to the islands of Réunion and Madagascar. In Chinese medicine, the lychee pit is used to stimulate the liver and relieve pain. In perfumery, lychee is reproduced identically in the laboratory and gives off rosy, green and fruity tonalities. The heart of The One is filled with white flowers (jasmine, white lily, lily of the valley), harmoniously blending with the sweet touch of plum. The origin of plum is uncertain, but it apparently results from a crossing between Asian and European fruit species. In France, it was not until the Middle Ages that plum truly gained popularity. Plums were then enjoyed as fresh fruit, in custards, compotes, tarts and jams! In perfumery, plum notes give off floral, powdery, fruity and syrupy tonalities. Finally, the base of The One is both woody and amber, combining vetiver, amber, musk and vanilla, offering a final, most voluptuous sillage. As for the bottle, it displays a sober and structural appearance. Made of a heavy glass block, the bottle is topped with a heavy gold-toned metal cap, inevitably leaving an impression of luxury.
